STATE O F M A I N E
OFFICE O F THE GOVERNOR 1 STATE HOUSE STATION
AUGUSTA, M A I N E 04333-0001 JOHN ELlAS BALDACCI GOVERNOR
January 3 1,2007 It is with great pleasure that I support Bruce Schwab's second foray into the Vendee Globe around-the-world race. He captivated the world when he became the first American ever to finish the race in 2005 and now he is slated to participate in the 20082009 Vendee Globe race and share his success with the state of Maine and the world.
Since his historic accomplishment at the 2005 Vendee Globe, Bruce has quickly emerged as a strong proponent for Maine's boat building and composites industries and has served as an ambassador for the state during recent trade missions to France. His international recognition also makes him a successful representative for brand awareness and sponsorship. He is dedicated to bringing business to Maine and strengthening the state's brand as a leader in the maritime industries. His decision to have his high-tech sailing vessel, Ocean Planet 11, built here will add to the state's long list of boat building accomplishments. Bruce's service to the state goes beyond the business sector. His commitment to education is evident through his strong connection to schools and students in Maine and across the United States. He is a maritime educator who travels to classrooms and continues to keep in contact with the students who followed his sailing adventures online during the 2005 Vendee Globe race. We are fortunate to have someone of Bruce's maritime caliber representing Maine on a global level. He has become synonomous with sailing history and has joined a distinguished list of historic maritime figures. As he sets out to compete in the 20082009 VendCe Globe race in France, Bruce has the support of the state and I hope he has yours as well. Since ely,
