INTERGENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN THE OLDER FAMILY — NEW FRONTIERS This course will examine the changing demoggraphics of families today and the implicattion this has for the interaction among the generations as families age: inccreased longevity of the oldest generation, fewer adult childdren from the low birthrate of the baby boomer generattion, more adult children remaining or returning to parents’ home, remarrriage/repartnering of older parents as well as the adult children, and the multigenerattional extended families that all these factors create. Against this changing demographic, this course will explore changing independence and dependeence needs of these generations, as well as efffective interpersonal communication styles in planning and supporting these needs. Instructor: Rheta Rosen Room: 125 Date: Fridays, Jan 15 - Feb 5 Time: 10:00 am–12:00 pm Price: $50 members and Ryerson/Chang members /$60 non-members Age: 55+ AMERICAN MOVIES AND THE POLITICS OF IDEALISM Using film and discussion, this course probes, from the dashed optimism of the Kennedy era through to its renewal in the early years of the Obama periiod, how key American movies from the last forty years have soaked up the political and cultural ideals of the time they were made. For example, The Manchurian Candidate (1962) foreshadowed the tragedy of Dallas a year later, In the Heat of the Night (1966) reflected the racially troubled Johnson era. American movies came to echo the secret aspirations and dashed expectations of the country’s deeply divisive elements. Many of the movies we’ll examine also shape – and reflect – much of American public thinking and discourse.
