Miss Lyons Eng 7 Lesson 5 Call of the Wild Objectives. In this lesson 1. Students will review characterization and its role in literature, specifically the call of the wild 2. Students will read/listen to and understand chapter 4 of call of the wild 3. Students will complete a character map for at least one character in the novella Understandings. At the end of this lesson students will be able to 1. Describe and understand specific characters in the novella including their motivations etc. students will possibly relate to one or more characters in the story 2. Complete a character map using specific examples from the novella 3. Describe the plot of Call of the Wild through chapter 4 Assessment. Student achievement and understanding will be checked 1. By sharing their postcards due this class 2. Class discussion on the plot of the story (participation) 3. Character map: graded on a complete/incomplete basis Instructional Approach. 1. Share postcards (one or two volunteers) 5-10 minutes 2. Review characterization 3-5 minutes 3. Read/listen to chapter 4

20-25 minutes 4. Hand out character maps and explain assignment 5 minutes HW: complete character map, study for spelling test Skills to be emphasized. Public speaking, discussion, identifying character traits and supporting with specific examples, reading, comprehension and listening skills. Standard 12: Fiction Students will identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding. • Analyze characters’ personality traits, motivations, and interactions with others and give supporting evidence from their words, actions, or thoughts. • Analyze the ways characters change or interact with others over time and give supporting evidence from the text.
