Virtual Color Study with Mandala iPad app: Mandala Coloring – Coloring Book for Adults Objectives: On this project, students will color a mandala on an iPad app with the utilization of relationship of color that they have learned in previous class, including elements and principals of art. “A mandala is a complex abstract design that is usually circular in form. In fact, "mandala" is a Sanskrit word that means ‘circle’. Mandalas generally have one identifiable center point, from which emanates an array of symbols, shapes and forms. Mandalas can contain both geometric and organic forms.” (art-is-fun.com). From this project, student will have a closer view of how each color is read differently by placing next to different other colors. Standards: •

1.4 Analyze and describe how the elements of art and the principles of design contribute to the expressive qualities of their own works of art.

2.2 Use different forms of perspective to show the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional surface.

2.4 Develop skill in mixing paints and showing color relationships.

4.5 Identify what was done when a personal work of art was reworked and explain how those changes improved the work.

Assignment: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Choose the second mandala under “Mandala Vol.2.” Identify the color scheme that you would like to use for this mandala. Determine each object created by many little pieces. Do not focus on each little piece yet. Decide which main color you want the object to be. Then use shades, tones, and tints of that color to apply to the object. 5. After finishing filling in all spaces in the mandala, you may want to replace some colors to strengthen the connections between each color and unify all of pieces into a whole united mandala. 6. Please download the mandala by clicking the “Download” button on the top right of the screen and send it to your teacher. Don’t forget to post your final work on group discussion page for online critique.
