Miss Lyons Call of the Wild Eng 7 Objectives. 1. In this lesson I will explain setting and its importance in the story. Understandings. 1. I want students to understand the definition of setting and its role in literature. 2. Students will understand the role of setting in The Call of the Wild and identify its elements. 3. Students will recognize the possibility of setting behaving as a character in the story. Assessment. Student achievement will be checked for in journaling and class discussion and homework assignment. Instructional Approach. 1. Vocabulary quiz 2. Review/recap 3. Explain setting 4. Read/listen to Call of the Wild 5. Discuss 6. Explain homework Bookmark activity Skills to be emphasized 1. Standard 8: Understanding a Text Students will identify basic facts and main ideas in a text and use them as the basis for interpretation. • Use knowledge of genre characteristics to analyze a text. • Interpret mood in a text and give supporting evidence. • Identify evidence in a text that supports an argument. 2. Standard 12: Fiction

Students will identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding. • Analyze the connections among setting, characterization, conflict, plot, and/or theme. Materials Needed. Copies of call of the wild, television, computer, copy of homework assignment, bookmarks. Sponge Activity. Begin working on weekend homework assignment.
