Miss Lyons Lesson 1 Call of the Wild Eng 7 Objectives. 1. Students will be introduced to the novella “Call of the Wild.” 2. Students will begin to understand the plot of the story and become excited to finish the rest of the novella. Understandings. 1. At the end of the lesson students will be able to identify the main characters of the story. 2. Students will understand the definition of primitive and begin applying this knowledge to the story. 3. Students will understand the meaning of primitive and begin to recognize its meaning in the Call of the Wild. Assessment. I will check for student achievement and understanding during class discussion. Every few pages I have bookmarked places to pause the audio recording and ask the class comprehensive questions. In addition, at the end of class we will discuss the meaning of primitive in the Call of the Wild and specific examples. Instructional Approach. 1. Provide dictionary definition of primitive on whiteboard. Primitive – early in the history of the world or humankind 2. Read/listen to Call of the Wild Audio Recording, stopping to discuss along the way. (25 minutes) 3. Journal Why is this chapter called “Into the Primitive”? Share journals.

(10 minutes) 4. Reflect on meaning/presence of primitive in story Examples in story (5 minutes) Homework: finish reading chapter 1, study vocabulary Skills to be emphasized. 1. Standard 8: Understanding a Text Students will identify basic facts and main ideas in a text and use them as the basis for interpretation. • Use knowledge of genre characteristics to analyze a text. • Interpret mood in a text and give supporting evidence. • Identify evidence in a text that supports an argument. 2. Standard 12: Fiction Students will identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding. • Analyze the connections among setting, characterization, conflict, plot, and/or theme. 3. Standard 4: Vocabulary and Concept Development Students will understand and acquire new vocabulary and use it correctly in reading and writing. • Determine the meanings of unfamiliar words using context clues (for example, contrast or cause and effect stated in the text). Materials Needed. Television, Computer, 25 copies of Call of the Wild, journals Sponge Activity. Review for Vocabulary test.
