Identifying Children with Learning Disabilities ✏

* general definition = “the term ‘specific learning disability’ means a disorder in 1 or more of the basic psychological process involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which disorder may manifest itself n the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations….

etc” ✏

~We can identify students with learning disabilities depending on how they are completing their class work and socializing with other students. Students with a learning disability like dyslexia or perceptional disabilities have problems reading or completing assignments because of their inability to read correctly.

* Also sometimes students have physical disabilities that can inflict and increase the chances of learning disabilities

Information Processing Model ✏

The Information Processing Model (IPM) describes learning as a series of components that involve sensory stimulation/input, processing/thinking and output or sharing of what has been learned

This process/model shows how students gain a large amount of knowledge using their 5 senses in a short amount of time and how they obtain the information through practice, and their short and long term memory.

Some students cannot absorb information, process it and then recite it back, so this model helps students find a way to gather their information, practice it, store it in their long term memory and that’s to the initial practice they can retrieve it and recite it back just as they learned it.

4 major components of an IPM is input, output, processing, and executive function

Primary Cause of Learning Disabilities ✏

Although some people believe there is a primary cause of learning disabilities, there is NOT one primary cause of a learning disability.

When students were studied, many students with learning disabilities have identified some neurological differences and sensory deficits associated with their said learning problems.

Some believe there are some factors that increase the possibility of having a learning disability. The factors are ✏ *genetics ✏ *environmental factors from inadequate prenatal health care to exposure to harmful substances

The Affects Sensory Memory, Short-term Memory and Long-term Memory have on students with Learning Disabilities ✏

*Sensory Memory - the ability to accommodate a

large amount of information for a short period of time (2-3 seconds) and allows us to take in information and interpret what we are seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, etc. Short-term Memory - temporarily storing information while simultaneously completing tasks; involves strategies for consciously storing information, such as rehearsal. Long-term Memory - a way of storing information in the brain for future retrieval *All three parts work together to help a student absorb information, reflect upon it with practice and understanding and store it for when it is needed. If any of these parts are not working to their fullest potential then the student will have some difficulties in learning, abstaining and presenting new information.
