Yet we do have a few precious insights. David Whitmer wrote:” “Joseph Smith would put the seer stone into a hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine. 11 Joseph Smith and the church leaders used The church newspaper Times and Seasons to lie and deceive members and the public alike over polygamy. “Inasmuch as the public mind has been unjustly abused through the fallacy of Dr. Bennett's letters, we make an extract on the subject of marriage, showing the rule of the church on this important matter. The extract is from the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, and is the only rule allowed by the church.” “All legal contracts of marriage made before a person is baptized into this church, should be held sacred and fulfilled. Inasmuch as this church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication, and polygamy: we declare that we believe, that one man should have one wife; and one woman, but one husband, except in case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again. It is not right to persuade a woman to be baptized contrary to the will of her husband neither is it lawful to influence her to leave her husband." “The manner in which he pretended to read and interpret was the same manner as when he looked for the money-diggers, with the stone in his hat, while the book of plates were at the same time hid in the woods." Hyrum Smith, Joseph Smith's brother and Assistant President of the church, wrote: “To the brethren of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, living on China Creek, in Hancock County, Greeting: Whereas brother Richard Hewitt has called on me to-day, to know my views concerning some doctrines that are preached in your place, and states to me that some of your elders say, that a man having a certain priesthood, may have as many wives as he pleases, and that doctrine is taught here: I say unto you that that man teaches false doctrine, for there is no such doctrine taught here; neither is there any such thing practiced here, and any man that is found teaching privately or publicly any such doctrine, is culpable, and will stand a chance to be brought before the High Council, and lose his license and membership also: therefore he had better beware what he is about..” (Times and seasons, March 15, 1844; Vol. 5, No. 6, p.474)

At the time he wrote this, Hyrum Smith had married at least five wives polygamously, most within the previous year (he was converted to the secret polygamy doctrine in 1843). His polygamous wives were Mercy R. Fielding, Catherine Phillips, Lydia Dibble, Louisa Sanger, a woman named Perry and another woman named Derbot. (listed in D. Michael Quinn, The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power [Vol. 1], Salt Lake City 1994, pp. 583-584)

In a public debate with Protestant ministers at Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, in 1850, John Taylor (then an apostle, later to become the third president of the church), said: “We are accused here of polygamy, and actions the most indelicate, obscene, and disgusting, such that none but a corrupt and depraved heart could have contrived. These things are too outrageous to admit of belief; therefore... I shall content myself to reading our views of chastity and marriage, from a work published by us, containing some of the articles of our Faith.” "Doctrine and Covenants," page 330, .... Lying About Polygamy Joseph Smith married over 33 women including 11 who were already married to living husbands. He married many teenagers and even 14 year old Helen Marr Kimball having persuaded her that she needed to do this for herself and her family’s salvation in a higher Celestial Kingdom. Others he told that an Angel with a drawn sword commanded him to do this or he would be slain. Not only did he practice polygamy secretly, he lied and deceived the public and ordinary church members all his life.

3 In an 1885 interview Zenas H. Gurley, then the editor of the RLDS Saints Herald, asked Whitmer if Joseph had used his "Peep stone" to do the translation. Whitmer replied: "... he used a stone called a "Seers stone,"the "Interpreters" having been taken away from him because of transgression. The Urim and Thummim so spoken of, however, was the seer stone which was in the possession of the Prophet Joseph Smith in early days. and the problem is if that if you’re not accurate then you down the line you put your own erm credibility in jeopardy and I don’t, I just want to think all of our young people should feel that they’re really getting the straight story on Joseph Smith or they’re going to go through the experience you’ve had, disillusionment, anger, it’s a very sad thing and it’s unnecessary, so we do need to avoid that.

October 9, 1859: Brigham young, during a conference talk in the Tabernacle: "You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind. The first man that committed the odious crime of killing one of his brethren will be cursed the longest of any one of the children of Adam. Cain slew his brother. Cain might have been killed, and that would have put a termination to that line of human beings. This was not to be, and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin. Trace mankind down to after the flood, and then another curse is pronounced upon the same race-that they should be the "servant of servants;" and they will be, until that curse is removed; and the Abolitionists cannot help it, nor in the least alter that decree. How long is that race to endure the dreadful curse that is upon them? That curse will remain upon them, and they never can hold the Priesthood or share in it until all the other descendants of Adam have received the promises and enjoyed the blessings of the Priesthood and the keys thereof. Until the last ones of the residue of Adam's children are brought up March 8, 1863: Brigham Young, during a conference to that favourable position, the children of talk in the Tabernacle, Cain cannot receive the first ordinances of Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African the Priesthood. April 27, 1845 Speech of Elder Orson Hyde, delivered before the High Priests' Quorum, in Nauvoo “At the time the devil was cast out of heaven, there were some spirits that did not know who had authority, whether God or the devil. They consequently did not take a very active part on either side, but rather thought the devil had been abused, . . . These spirits were not considered bad enough to be cast down to hell, and never have bodies; neither were they considered worthy of an honourable body on this earth: . . . John Taylor, the third president of the LDS Church “Why is it, in fact, that we should have a devil? Why did not the Lord kill him long ago? . . .He needed the devil and great many of those who do his bidding just to keep . . . our dependence upon God, . . . Future Mormon Prophet Wilford Woodruff: “If we were to do away with polygamy, it would only be one feather in the bird, one ordinance in the Church and kingdom. Do away with that, then we must do away with Prophets and Apostles, with revelation and the gifts and graces of the Gospel, and finally give up our religion altogether “ (Wilford Woodruff, Journal of Discourses 13:p165 - 166 ,1869.)

Threats of Hell to the women who resist Plural Marriage “Brother George A. Smith has been reading a little out of the revelation concerning celestial marriage, and I want to say to my sisters that if you lift you heels against this revelation, and say that you would obliterate it, and put it out of existence if you had the power to nullify and destroy it, I say that if you imbibe that spirit and feeling, you will go to HELL, just as sure as you are living women...You sisters may say that plural marriage is very hard for you to bear. It is no such thing...But it is not the privilege of a woman to dictate the husband, and tell who or how many he shall take, or what he shall do with them when he gets them, but it is the duty of the woman to submit cheerfully” (Brigham Young; Journal Of Discourses VOL 17 page 159)

The Lord is in our midst. He teaches the people continually. I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call Scripture. Let me have the privilege of correcting a sermon, and it is as good Scripture as they deserve. The people have the oracles of God continually. In the days of Joseph, revelation was given and written, and the people were driven from city to city and place to place, until we were led into these mountains. Let this go to the people with "Thus saith the Lord," and if they do not obey it, you will see the chastening hand of the Lord upon them. Did God the Father have Physical Sex with Mary? “... I believe the Father came down from heaven, as the Apostles said he did, and begat the Saviour of the world; for he is the ONLY-begotten of the Father, which could not be if the Father did not actually beget him in person.... “There is a reason why one man is BORN BLACK and with OTHER DISADVANTAGES, while another is BORN WHITE with GREAT ADVANTAGES. The reason is that we once had an estate before we came here, and were obedient; more or less, to the laws that were given us there. Those who were faithful in all things there [pre-existence] received greater blessings here, and those who were not faithful received less. . . . There were no neutrals in the war in Heaven. All took sides either with Christ or with Satan. Every man had his agency there, and men receive rewards here based upon their actions there, just as they will receive rewards hereafter for deeds done in the body. The Negro, evidently, is receiving the reward he merits” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 1:61, 65-66 ) On the superiority of the Mormons over "Fallen Nations", including Africans: “...among the Saints is the most likely place for these spirits to take their tabernacles, through a just and righteous parentage.
