"THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS".

The edition is listed in Nancy Marshall’s recent bibliography of editions and appearances of "The Night Before Christmas." In The Snow Drop, Moore’s poem is titled: "Christmas Eve; or The Visit of St. Nicholas," and there are two worthy points to consider in connection with Marshall’s bibliography. Marshall observes that other than the sole publication in the newspaper, The Schenectady Whig in 1832, the first appearance of the phrase "Merry Christmas" for the original "Happy Christmas" in the last line of the poem, is not until 1862. This change appears in The Snow Drop some fourteen years earlier. Perhaps even more significantly, while Marshal notes that the first, presumably separate, foreign publication of the poem is not until 1898, in Raphael Tuck’s Father Tuck’s Nursery Tales, series from England, her earliest listing of foreign periodical printings of the poem is in two separate British journals, both in the year 1851. The Snow Drop thus predates the first recorded foreign appearance of Moore’s poem by three years.

Despite being a Peter Parley book, this was not written by Goodrich, but by Samuel Clark. Presummed the first edition. "In his Recollections of a life-time, S.G. Goodrich, the original Peter Parley, lists this as one of the most notorious of 'English counterfeits and imposition'--Toronto Public Library. Uncommon. Wilson was purportedly Samual Clark - Darton's partner but some suggest he was an alleged figure and although many Peter Parley books were frequently been attributed to him, he never acutally existed. Wilson, may or may not have. Peter Parley was a pseudonym used by S.G. Goodrich, but this work is attributed to Samuel Clark (also known as T. Wilson), cf. Rowley was a London merchant and businessman who had extensive interests and properties in Turkey and was compelled there because of the disruptive nature of the Turkish government. Rowley's travels take him through coffee-houses, meetings with opium-eaters; views of Turkish corporal and capital punishment, a clandestine first-hand account of his visit to the sultan's seraglio. Much is mentioned of the garments worn, dishes prepared and bazaars attended. On a smaller scale, Rowley explores a half-dozen other cities and deserts throughout , Albania, Austria and Transylvania We question this book being written for a Juvenile audience, especially in 1833.

MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT

IN HELPING HER FINANCIALLY.

From the "advertisement" written by Wollstonecraft... "All the pictures are drawn from real life, and that I highly approve of this method, my having written a book on the same plan* (* Entitled, Original Stories from real life), is the strongest proof. I have here also inserted a little tale, to lead children to consider the Indians as their brothers, because the omission of this subject appeared to be a chasm in a well-digested system." The book contains stories for children relating to the morality of the late 18th century. 1st US editions were (Philadelphia) and Rhode Island , both 1795 editions. $325

With an introductory address to parents, translated from the German of the Rev. C.G. Salzmann, translated & adapted by Mary Wollstonecraft.

EDITION.

“The only complete work of children's literature by eighteenth-century British feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. Original Stories begins with a frame story, which sketches out the education of two young girls by their maternal teacher Mrs. Mason, proceeded by a series of didactic tales. In Original Stories Wollstonecraft employs the burgeoning genre of children's literature to promote the education of women and an emerging middle-class ideology. She argues that women can be rational adults if they are educated properly as children (not a widely-held belief in the eighteenth century) and contends that the nascent middle-class ethos is superior to the court culture represented by fairy tales and to the values of chance and luck found in chapbook stories for the poor.” (quoted from Wikiedia)
