Labour Day Long Weekend

Labour Day celebrates the 8 hour working day for all Australians. It is an annual public holiday for workers. Australian states and territories celebrate it on different dates. Melbourne will celebrate Labour Day with a public holiday on Monday 13th March 2017. Labour Day is an important day to remember the people who worked very hard to get fair working conditions for all workers. In the 1800s people worked very long hard days, up to 12 hours every day 6 days a week. In 1856 people marched from Melbourne University to Parliament House to push for an 8 hour working day. Employers agreed to 48 hour week (8 hours 6 days a week). In 1879 the Victorian Government decided to make Labour Day a paid public holiday. The number 888 is very important and we see it on many union buildings. It means people work for 8 hours, sleep for 8 hours and relax (labour, rest, recreation) for 8 hours every day. (8 x 3= 24 hours.) This is a picture of the Eight Hour monument. It is in Spring Street, Melbourne. It was made in 1903.
