As a Westmont High School student, I believe that it is important that you have chances to apply the skills you learn in school to impact important social issues. For this reason, I asked Ms. BT if I could invite students to attend the Illinois Legislative Latino Council Conference. I am hoping you will join us for this exciting event. This conference focuses on Latino public issues, including education, immigration, health and human services, and the economy. The top executives in the State of Illinois will address these issues, so you don’t want to miss this day. It will be a day of Civics education that you SHOULD NOT MISS. I am inviting you to attend because I believe we should all be aware of the causes facing Latinos today. Your Latino heritage, interest in speaking Spanish, or desire to learn more about the US government makes you a good fit for this field trip. Your participation will have an impact on our school community by introducing them to local and global issues that must be addressed by our youth. During the conference, you will meet influential people in a legislative setting. Networking is important, and the people you meet may help you in the future. When I attended this conference last year, I was given contact information, websites, and encouraged to take notes on the things the speakers said. After the conference, I reviewed my notes, looked at the webpages, and felt more informed about the things going on in the Latino community. The cost of this trip will be covered by CUSD 201 and State Representative Patti Bellock. This trip includes a pass to the conference, continental breakfast and a luncheon. The ILLCF annual will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2009, at the Donald E. Stephens convention center in Rosemont, Illinois. We will leave WHS at 7:15 AM and return at 5:30 PM. Dress for the day is “business casual” which means it is more formal than school. If you are interested, please return the attached permission slip to Ms. BT. We will take 20 people on the trip. Participants will be selected based on the applications they submit. Sincerely, Carlos Guttierez Nancy Bartosz WHS Student Assistant Principal
