What is KWL?
“K” What I know…
Have students to work, independently, either with a partner or with a small group, to list everything they know about a particular topic.
Elicite information from students by asking them what they know about a particular topic.
Brainstorming ideas and discussing can be used.
“W” What I want to know
Follow the same process to have students list everything they want to know about the topic. List these in the W (want to know) column.
Add these items to the whole class chart. Use these questions and topics to guide inquiry projects or other learning activities.
“L” What I have learned
You can give written material to the students for them to read the information about the selected topic.
You can play a video about the selected topic so that students can gather new information.
After reading the material or watching the video, students will be able to identify whether they learned what they wanted to know plus other new information.
