tor i d e e m th o r f e m welco Welcome to the June issue of the Girl Spot newsletter! I don’t know about all of you, but June is my favorite month of the year. I love the warmth of summer, and I love all the events that take place in Columbus in June. Most of all, I love that people seem to be so much more social in the summer than when it’s cold out. I recently spent the most wonderful Friday evening sitting on a friend’s porch; it started off with four people and three dogs, and the night evolved constantly. We took the dogs home, came back, new people arrived, we struck up conversations with the neighbors, and had so much more fun than if we really “did” anything. I am thrilled with how Girl Spot has grown in our first two months, and look forward to even more excitement and growth in June! I hope you all enjoy

the sunshine, the green grass, the occasional thunderstorm, and the fabulous social atmosphere of this time of year. Girl Spot wants to be part of that. We’ll be hosting our monthly game night on June 3rd, a “drivein” movie on June 17th, weekly sports and rec events, as well as volunteer meetings, special events for Pride, and our unofficial socials every Wednesday at 8:00pm at MoJoe Lounge in the Short North! If you’re just learning about Girl Spot, come to any of our events, check out our website, send us email, and get to know us. You’ll be glad you did! www.myspace.com/girlspotcolumbus Email: [email protected] -Emily Anderson 1

Yeah, that would be sweet.

te a d p U May After a great kick off in April, May saw a huge amount of growth for Girl Spot. Our first and third Sunday events were both hugely successful, the softball team has been having a great time, and the sports and rec events are off and running. Our second monthly game night was held on Sunday, May 6th. About 45 womyn spent a very fun evening playing games, eating, drinking, talking, and making new friends. I played Apples to Apples, and Scattergories, then watched some friends playing a very entertaining game called Mad Gab. There were card games, a very spirited game of Pictionary, and lots of other fun. Several of our attendees brought their children, and the kids got to have a great time upstairs too. Our third Sunday event was held on May 20th. We called the event “Meat and Veg”. Several of the volunteers cooked dinner for small groups of attendees and hosted informal dinner parties at Stonewall. There was a lot of really good food – appetizers, salads, and a variety of main dishes including Mexican lasagna, pasta, chicken, jambalaya, and others, and let’s not forget

about the desserts. Girl Spot definitely has some talented cooks in our volunteer pool! One attendee at each table also won a set of Pride Tags, for listening carefully to their hostess, and being the first to correctly answer a question she posed. Great food, prizes, what more could we have asked for? The softball team has had several games, and are really playing well together as a team and having a great time. It’s a lot of fun to watch the games, just as an excuse to sit in the sun and chat with people. You can see the schedule of games on the calendar on page 5, so bring your dogs/kids/etc and come hang out at Berliner Park for the next game! We’ve also had some great recreational events in May: a canoe trip to Hocking Hills, a picnic/beach event at Delaware State Park, and a trip to the Columbus Zoo. Check out the pictures on the website and come join us next time. -Emily Anderson

june comm unit y eve nts June is such a fantastic month in Columbus! Check out the June calendar on the back of the newsletter for the lowdown but I wanted to talk briefly about two of my favorite Columbus events (other than Pride – see next page) that take place this month. The Columbus Arts Festival runs Thursday, June 7th – Sunday, June 10th in downtown Columbus along the riverfront. There are tons of artists, food vendors, and entertainment. The GirlSpot rec activity for Saturday, June 9th will be a trip to the arts festival. This is a FREE event and very kid friendly. We’ll meet at Stonewall at noon, then carpool downtown, and enjoy the festivities. More information is available from the Greater Columbus Arts Council at www.gcac.org/fest. Two weekends later is Comfest, the Community Festival. This will be the 34th year for the festival, and it is now and always put on entirely by volunteers with no corporate sponsors. The guiding principle of Comfest is that it’s a “Party with a Purpose” and there is a political basis to the event. I won’t go on too long, but check out www.comfest.com if it sounds like your cup of tea. It is a festival for everyone – children, adults, pets, all ages and walks of life, are invited to Goodale Park to enjoy a weekend of music, food, drinks, vendors, and a relaxed fun atmosphere. Comfest always takes place the same weekend as Pride so it can be a bit of a juggling act to attend both, but I personally feel that it’s worth the effort! - Emily Anderson

nts e v e pot s g G e jun Game Night is back and will be better than ever on Sunday, June 3rd, from 5-7pm at Stonewall. As always, this is a potluck event. Bring food or snacks, games if you’ve got them (although we have plenty as you can see), or just bring yourself and come hang out. Kids are welcome, and our expert “kid spotters” will be on hand to keep them entertained upstairs. Our third Sunday event is going to be great fun as well. We’ll be doing a “drive-in” movie on Sunday, June 17th, starting at 5pm in the parking lot behind Stonewall. The featured movie will be “Saving Face”, a romantic comedy about a Chinese-American lesbian whose conservative mother suddenly moves in with her. We’ll be projecting the movie outdoors, so bring your truck, lawn chairs, or blankets and take advantage of a warm summer night. Popcorn will be provided, but feel free to bring snacks to share as well. We’re asking for a suggested donation of $2 to cover the cost of the projector. There will be rec events every Saturday. Check the calendar or our myspace page for more details! Hope to see you all soon! - Emily Anderson
