ummer time is a busy time at Immanuel. That is not only true with all the activities taking place on campus, but also with many significant ministry events off campus as well. As you make your prayer list for July and August, don’t forget to include: God and Country Patriotic Worship service, July 5; Youth Mission Trip to Paraguay, July 10-19; Children’s Camp at Siloam Springs, July 27-31; Sunday School Preparation Weekend, August 8-9; Adult Choir Retreat at the Red Apple Inn, August 21-22 and the Church Wide Golf Tournament at Harbor Oaks Golf Course, August 28. It will be my joy to accompany our students on the mission trip to Paraguay. This will necessitate my missing one Sunday (July 12) but I have invited Dr. Rex Horne to preach that morning. I know you will not want to miss this occasion to hear our beloved former pastor. On August 23, Dr. Jerry Vines will be here for a one day revival. As many of you know, Dr. Vines is one of my mentors in ministry and it is always a joy to hear him preach. Dr. Vines has served as pastor of West Rome Baptist Church in Georgia, Dauphin Way Baptist in Mobile, Alabama and from 1982 until his retirement in 2006, the 20,000 member First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida. He was twice elected President of the Southern Baptist Convention (1988-1989) and also served as President of the Alabama and SBC Pastors’ Conferences. He now travels and preaches around the country bringing solid exegetical biblical preaching along with his unwavering evangelistic heart. Make your plans to be present for this historic day! In July I will begin a series of messages on what it means to be a “missional” congregation. That may be a new word for you, but it is a word used to describe a particular approach to doing missions. Then in August we will look at what the Bible says about the importance of making disciples and the process of discipleship. We will discover this is something that is much easier to talk about than to actually do, but it is the very heart of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. These months will also be key in our Season of Service as we prepare for the Luis Palau CityFest coming in October. It is my prayer that God will use this preparation time to bring believers together like never before in Central Arkansas and that we will see a sweeping revival movement begin that will last long after the October event has come and gone. Please make this a matter of daily prayer. I am optimistically expecting that 100% of our IBC family will find a way to plug into the Season of Service as we reach out to our community with the Good News of the Gospel! Please know how much I love being your pastor. Thank you for your faithfulness in attendance and giving, especially during these summer months. I look forward to each and every week of sharing the Word of God with our dear Immanuel Family!

What Is I-Disciple (Immanuel Disciple)?

New Bible Study Year Begins August 16!

It is Christian discipleship at its best! Discipleship, as opposed to popular belief, is not teaching. Teaching is to discipleship as chewing is to eating... you may get a taste but you’re still going to starve to death. You have to swallow, digest and metabolize what you chewed or it does you no good. You can’t be taught discipleship, it has to be caught by intimate contact with people who are living it. Jesus spent 3 years living with the 12 disciples. They went where He went, slept where He slept, ate what He ate, and witnessed every word He spoke and action He took. Even after He ascended, the standard discipleship method for 350 years was small, intimate groups who spent most of their lives together. We’re fooling ourselves if we think an hour or two each week spent listening to someone talk comes anywhere near discipleship...even if we’re taking notes. What is needed is intimate small groups, where Christian living is the focus, rather than preaching or teaching. This is why we do what we do. Please find your place to grow! 03 The Record

Immanuel ...impacting the world EL CAJON, Calif. (BP) - At 29, Issa Haddad (pictured far left) is an enthusiastic Southern Baptist who supports the Cooperative Program and hopes to become a missionary after finishing his seminary education. Haddad was born in New York but raised in Jordan, where his parents were Christians in an Arab nation. In college, he attended a Christian camp for students and sensed the Holy Spirit working in his life. “When I went back home, I was singing the songs that they were singing, and I found myself kneeling beside my bed and praying,” Haddad said, recounting his testimony to Baptist Press. As he graduated from college in Jordan, Haddad wanted to study theology. Because of his U.S. citizenship, he decided to move to the United States to attend seminary. He ended up at Southern California Seminary, which is affiliated with Shadow Mountain Community Church, a San Diego-area Southern Baptist congregation. It was there that he noticed an advertisement for Unlimited Partnerships, a ministry that trains future church leaders through mentoring and networking. Haddad was accepted into the program and was matched with Rolland Slade (pictured middle), pastor of Meridian Baptist Church, a multiethnic congregation in El Cajon, Calif.

“Currently we are running 85-90 in Sunday School. When he started we were running 65-70,” Slade said. “As you can see just from the numbers, our Sunday School is growing. What you cannot see is the enthusiasm that has developed.”

Before the trip, Haddad knew little about CP -- only that his church gave money to it. He thought the money probably was being used mostly for SBC administrative costs. He learned, though, that only a small amount of CP gifts are used for administration and most of it supports missions and seminaries.

To supplement his training, Haddad was one of about 10 Unlimited Partnerships students to make a trip to Nashville, Tenn., and metro Atlanta in March to learn more about the Southern Baptist Convention. They toured offices and met with leaders from the Executive Committee, Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, LifeWay Christian Resources and the North American Mission Board.

“Also, financially it’s supported by many churches. It’s not one church or a small group of churches,” he said. “It’s many churches that give, so it’s reliable.”

“I’ve never really asked him how he felt that first day,” Slade said, “but I’m African American and I don’t know if he thought, ‘Where am I going?’ in terms of where this church was going to be.”

“Overall I really was impressed with the information,” Haddad said. “My appreciation for Southern Baptists grew from that trip.”

Haddad serves as Meridian Baptist’s minister of education, with his salary paid by a sponsoring congregation, Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock, AR. In addition to his studies, he meets regularly with Slade to strategize for the church.

Because he hopes to be a missionary someday, Haddad said he especially was touched by what he heard at NAMB about church planting. But what stood out most from the trip, he said, was what he learned about the Cooperative Program, Southern Baptists’ unified giving plan for national and international missions and ministries.

Since Haddad’s arrival through the Unlimited Partnerships program, Meridian has seen a steady growth in overall attendance and Sunday School as well as Cooperative Program giving.

Haddad was impressed with the fact that smaller Southern Baptist churches can partner to support thousands of missionaries when otherwise they couldn’t afford to send even one. “With the Cooperative Program they are able to send as many as they want,” he said. Slade said Haddad came back from the trip “completely sold on the idea of being a Southern Baptist.” “You can explain it to a degree to people, and I think I did a good job of explaining it and showing him where he could find more information to read, but when he actually went there and sat down with Dr. [Johnny] Hunt and Dr. [Morris H.] Chapman, he came back saying, ‘Wow, this is so much bigger than I ever thought it was.’ I told him, ‘I could explain it to you, but you really had to see it.’”

Haddad plans to graduate from Southern California Seminary in May with a master of divinity degree, and then he hopes to pursue a doctorate in education before venturing back to the Middle East to share his faith. “Our missionaries are being supported without worrying about how they are going to make it out on the field and if their sponsors will continue to support them or not,” Haddad said. “This is being taken care of by the Cooperative Program.” Since learning more about the Cooperative Program, Haddad said he has increased his personal giving to missions. “I just needed to be reminded of the importance and the impact that CP is having in North America and also in the world,” he said.

1 | IT’S A GOD THING | Luis Palau This book illustrates the small, often mysterious ways in which God orchestrates events to create something positive amid the confusion and pain of daily life. Even when we don’t understand, God gives us what we need most. 2 | ALWAYS LOOKING UP | Michael J.
