● Introduction This directory contains information about the journals and newspapers currently taken at the Central Library, as of January 2008. The directory is arranged alphabetically by title and there is a subject index which starts on page 10. Each record shows: •

the department which holds the current issue

•

the frequency of publication

•

the extent of any back files

•

a short description of the publication

•

its website

•

if the publication and / or its website carries job adverts

For details of which particular day's edition of a newspaper carries specific for particular categories of job adverts please see page 9. Two electronic indexes to art journals - the Art Index (AI) and the Design & Applied Arts Index (DAAI) - are available in the Art Library. If a journal which the Art Library holds is indexed in either of these indexes this is indicated in its record. Please see page 5 for further information. Leeds Library and Information Service also subscribes to a number of online resources, some of which allow access to journal and newspaper articles. Please see page 7 and www.leeds.gov.uk/onlineresources Some Central departments hold collections of journals to which we no longer subscribe or which have ceased publication. These are not listed here but holdings are included in departmental catalogues or the online catalogue at www.leeds.gov.uk/catalogue Please check availability with the department concerned before making any special journeys. Indexes to Journals and Newspapers

Art Index – available in the Art Library Art Index provides comprehensive indexing for leading international art publications, including journals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins. The areas of art covered include: painting, sculpture, photography, advertising, archaeology, decorative arts, crafts, pottery, folk art, graphic arts, fashion, textiles, interior design, industrial design, television, video, film, museum studies, architecture, art history and art theory. There is coverage of contemporary art around the world, Canadian, Latin American, and Asian arts, new artists, exhibition reviews, non-western art, and feminist art criticism. If a journal which the Art Library holds is indexed in the Art Index this is indicated in its record. Design and Applied Arts Index (DAAI) – available in the Art Library DAAI is an international index to design and craft journals, containing 178,756 records (as of November 2007) from more than 450 journals published since 1973, with the majority of the references dating from 1987. The areas of design and craft covered include: industrial design, architecture, interior design, environmental design, computer aided design, furniture design, ceramics, glass, jewellery, metalworking, silversmithing, goldsmithery, fashion design, textile design, embroidery, graphic design, typography, multimedia design, illustration, book design, photography, advertising, retail design, packaging, exhibition design, theatre design, design and craft history, design and craft theory. Leeds Art Libraries in Co-operation – available online and in the Art Library The Art Library is a member of LALIC (Leeds Art Libraries in Co-operation) along with the College of Art and Design, the Henry Moore Institute, and the art libraries of both the University of Leeds (Brotherton Library) and Leeds Metropolitan University. LALIC has produced a 'union list' of its collective holdings of journals, so that if the Art Library in the Central Library does not have a particular title or issue, we can check if it is available at any of the other sites. The LALIC Union List of Journals can be viewed at the Art Library’s page at www.leeds.gov.uk/libraries or in the Art Library.

Leeds Local Indexes – available online Leeds Local Indexes consists of indexes to newspaper and journal cuttings, indexes to census material for the area and resources such as the indexes to the Quaker and Non-Conformist Registers. This database contains over 250,000 records and provides a huge resource for remote access to our collections. www.leedslocalindex.net

Leeds Business Indexes – available online Search annotated records to articles about business in some of the journals and newspapers described in this directory, and much besides, using the Leeds Business Indexes at www.leedsbusinessindex.net

The Times Digital Archive - available at The Information Centre Allows online access to 200 years of The Times newspaper. The Times is the "world's newspaper of record" and covers all major international historical events from the French Revolution to the Falkland War. The paper was founded in 1754, as the Leedes Intelligencer, making it one of Britain's first daily newspapers. Like The Scotsman, it has the look and feel of a national broadsheet, rather than a local news carrier. Its focus on international and national news gives it a wider focus than that usually associated with a provincial newspaper; editions are also available daily in central London.
