Reading Response - Journal ~ Novel ~ Cheaper by The Dozen [Ernestine Gilbreth Carey and Frank Gilbreth, Jr.]

Summary:

Tom Baker and his wife, Kate, hoping to bring their family together for a memorable summer vacation, take their 12 offspring to the rustic Lake Winnetka. But their retreat soon becomes cutthroat when they enter into a competition with the overachieving members of a large family headed by Tom’s long-time rival, Jimmy Martaugh.

Opinion:

Going vacation with the whole family is a good way to tighten the relation in the family. Besides that, fighting will not solve the problem, but it will cause another problem. Good ways to solve problem are to talk honestly and together find the solution, or ask suggestions from your family, because family is the one who cares about us beside God, so that’s what family for, also before you start all of it, you must pray to God for help and He will surely help you if you take it seriously.

Vocabulary:

1. Cutthroat  cruel/ mean. ~ Smack down is one of the examples of cutthroat show. 2. Rustic  covered with rust. ~ Tom’s villa is very rustic and old.

Summary:

Picking through the wreckage of Sarajevo, a Muslim couple hunt for firewood. Their homes and utilities in ruins, the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina face the grim aftermath of the costliest war on European soil in half a century. With 200,000 dead, almost 5% of Bosnia’s population paid the ultimate price for the breakup of Yugoslavia, Ethnic pluralism, once Bosnia’s trademark, becomes its curse when it declared independence in 1992, triggering nearly 4 years of war.

Opinion:

The Muslim’s couple was doing a very great and helpful job. Great and helpful mean they were doing the 3r, which are recycling, reproduce, and reuse. It’s not only great and helpful job for them, but also for Bosnia or maybe for other countries, because they can learn how to recycle, reproduce, and also reuse.

Vocabulary:

1. Trigger  something that causes reaction. ~ My teacher gives me a triggering question before starting the lesson. 2. Wreckage  ruins. ~ Many people tried to take things as much as possible from the wreckage to be solved. 3. Grim  gloom/ scary. ~ The house looks grim to me; I don’t want to stay in the house.

Ideas for Serving and Storing Wine

Summary:

White wine is suitable for one climate. It is also suitable for chicken, pork, and sea foods. White got to be chill at 8 to 12 Celsius degrees, to enjoy the wines at the right temperature. On the other hand, reds go well with red meats. It is better to be serve in bigger bowled glasses, so that the wine can “breathe” and its aromas can be released. Red wines should never be drunk more than 4 days.

Opinion:

Most of people don’t know how to serve red and white wines when they have barbeque party. This article helps people who like to drink and produce wine, so that they can know how to serve and store or keep wine well.

Vocabulary:

1. Release  make it free/ make something free. ~ Tony releases her girlfriend to go abroad. 2. Narrower  make it narrow/ become narrow. ~ The street near my house is narrower now.

Save The Children [The Singapore Women’s Weekly, November 2007]

Summary:

Everyday, children from war-torn countries who suffer from extreme poverty are forced to work in sweatshops and sex clubs, and under deplorable conditions. Some ways can be done to help the children, for example, rehabilitation, rards, rescue, and also relocation.

Opinion:

Saving the unlucky children is the most important job of all human. As we know that as human, we were created to help each other, especially children, because children are our next generation who will build and lead this world.

Vocabulary:

1. Deplorable  unlucky. ~ We have to help the deplorable children. 2. Deliberately  really intensive. ~ Susan is deliberately fond of shopping.

What can enrichment classes do for your child? [The Singapore Women’s Weekly, July 2008]

Summary:

Enrichment classes provide children with opportunities to discover their specials interests and talents; they also allow the parents to focus on other aspects of their children’s development other than academics.

Opinion:

Beside academic classes, enrichment classes are also useful for the children’s growth. Children can find their talents or abilities through the enrichment classes, so the children will not get stressed in academic classes. They also know their purpose of life in the future, whether to be a doctor, artist, or maybe sportsman/woman.

Vocabulary:

1. Twirl  spinning/ go around. ~ Don’t twirl, because you will get dizzy. 2. Array  important thing. ~ We have to pay attention to the array before we decide something.

Japan built new school for disabled children in Tangerang. The school fee per month is Rp 5,000 to Rp 10,000. The school was built for children from low-income families and also for children who have various disabilities including autism, visual impairment, blindness and partial or complete deafness. The school consists of a kitchen, a clinic, 12 class rooms, teachers’ office, and also auditorium. To build the school, it needed Rp 1, 1 billion.

Opinion:

This idea is good and helpful, especially for children whose parents don’t have money to send their children to school. It is also good for children who have various disabilities. By building this school, many children who can’t afford it can go to school now. So, by doing this, we will have smart generations to lead the world in the future. Vocabulary: 1. Municipality  town or city with its own local government • Japan built a school in Tangerang municipality. 2. Chronic  very bad or worse •

The disease of poor children in Tangerang is chronic.

24 students from Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia took part in the activities organized at the 9th Hitachi Young Leaders

Initiative (HYLI), which ran from July 7 to July 11, 2008, held in Taman mini Indonesia Indah (TMII). The activities are finishing puzzle, solving the quiz, lunch time, and also discussion. Their purposed was to unite the relationship among Asian countries, especially in facing the global free market. Opinion:

By doing this activities, Asian countries can have a good relationship between one and others. They can solve the problem and face it together. They can be more powerful. Maybe it is better to hold it again, for example, every year or maybe every six months, so they can get closer.

Vocabulary: 1. Leverage  power •

Asian countries can have more leverage by doing this kind of activities.

2. Archipelago  a group of many small islands •

Indonesia is an archipelago country.

Indonesian businessman plans to drop money from airplane [November 18, 2008] Summary:

A businessman named Tung Desem Waringin wants to promote his new book by making a rain of money in Jakarta. He will spend Rp 100,000,000 for his

money rain. But, unfortunately, the police don’t agree with Mr. Tung, because it will create a chaos. Opinion:

Actually, the rain of money is good, because it can help poor people to buy their daily needs or something. This is one of the ways to help them. But, on the other way, it can cause some problems. For example, many people will be killed because they fight each other to get the money and also the street will be crowded and dirty. It is better for Mr. Tung to give the money directly to the people for promoting his new book.

Vocabulary: 1. Stunt  attraction or attractor •

Money rain is one of Mr. Tung’s stunts to promote his new book.

I.G Bagus Gloria Kusuma Pradana, one of the science teachers, made an experiment about fermented carrot with one goal in mind: to create a healthy,

appetizing snack for Indonesian children, and secure a spot in the third annual science fair over the weekend. Their experiment was chosen from 72 projects from more than 20 state, private and international schools across Bali. People were enthusiastic to see the fair. The purpose from the experiment was to make the students attracted or interested in learning science. Opinion:

This kind of experiment is good for developing students’ interest in learning science, because learning science through experiment is much more fun and easier. Besides that, making food for fermented food can be more effective and children will like to eat vegetables which are very healthy.

Vocabulary: 1. Rotten  not fresh anymore •

Rotten carrot can be fermented and made into crispy chips.

2. Puffy  swollen •

Crispy carrot chips are not puffy food.
