Slavery Growing up with a dad who has an interest in music, I have been exposed to jazz from an early age. I never understood where the genre came from until I grew up and became more aware of what was happening around me, that jazz was born because of the oppressed people of color who were transported to America without their consent, forced into labor, abused, maltreated, mocked, and segregated. When watching the documentary, I was already familiar of the past that these people experienced. It hasn’t been that long since laws in America on anti-segregation, anti-slavery have been passed, and although our society has improved in an exponential rate, there is still oppression occurring in multiple states in America. Thus, so much people are still fighting for their rights. The #BlackLivesMatter movement started just recently when Donald Trump, a white republican, was elected as President of The United States. This started because of the high rate of racism occurring in the streets, as well as the high rate of police brutality occurring in the black community.
