Acting Commissioner Carol Ash NYS Office of Parks. Recreation and Historic Preservation Agency Building I Empire State Plaza Albany, New York 12238 Dear Actrng Commissioner Ash: Enclosed is an article and editorial from The Smithtown News datedlJanuary 18, 2007 concenring a potentially immineirt dangcrous condttion existing on the newly designated portion of theNissequogue River State Park.
Through repeated calls and correspondence, the Kings Park commur{ity and town officials have expressed their concerns that the smoke stack of the now closed powerlplant on the property is in such disrepair that rt is rn danger of collapsing. If lefl unatterrded and $.nosed to severe weather conditions, this structure could posc a real and significant physical fnd environmcntal ttreat to pedestnans using the iuke and brkc trail in the imrnediate area, as r{ell as the motor vehicles that routinely travel the streets on and around the property. ,
Since this property is under the jurisdiction of thc Officc of Parks, RBcreation and Historical Preservatron, we ask that your office devote immediate attention qnd resources to this pressing matter. The smoke stack and adloining building should be evaluat{d by park engineers to determine their struchrral integnty and immediate plans should be develoiled for the future of
buildings. As mcntioned in the editorial, through my efforts $25 millipn in state fi.rndrng was secured in lasl year's budget and remains avarlable to address this critidally important issue.

As always, I rematn available to discuss this and the long-term plans for redeveloping the expanded parklands at Nrssequogue River State Park.
