Letters to the Editor am sure you would agree that she’s a great actress too. When I was traveling last month, I saw her Hollywood movie My Bollywood Bride on the plane and she was too good. I hope you will give due coverage to talented actresses like Kashmira.
The feature that most impressed me about the article was that the writer had taken pains to give the factual information about how and where one could participate in Dune Bashing. I think this adds a lot of value to any article, especially a travel piece.

Kashmira Shah is a talented actress no doubt. We feature people on the cover when they are in the news for something. We are presenting you Kashmira Shah live in Rhythm Events’ “Hollywood Style Bollywood Hungama”. You can meet with your favorite star and get her autograph at the event. — Editor
Suggestion for improvement
Disappointing Movie

Phenomenal Progress
I
am very happy with the progress of your magazine. I remember reading your Imran Khan issue (my daughter is a big fan!) and was pretty disturbed to see that advertisement dominated the magazine! I wasn’t sure whether I should pick up the magazine again. I am glad I continued reading Salaam Namaste. Over the past few months I have seen phenomenal improvement in terms of the articles and community news. I look forward to the magazine month after month to know all about the events in the DFW metro area. Keep up the good work! Ketaki Shah Mehta Carollton, TX
Great Family Magazine
W
ow! That’s all I have to say about Salaam Namaste. I rarely pick up the free magazines stacked in front of desi stores and restaurants, but since I am a big fan of Kashmira Shah I picked up your latest issue. But after going through your magazine I have become a big fan of Salaam Namaste too. I enjoyed reading the extensive coverage of local community events and my kids enjoyed the puzzles in the Kids Corner. I will start picking up the magazine regularly from now on. Coming back to Kashmira Shah, I wonder why you took so long to feature her. Is it because she’s known for her sexy dances? I Salaam Namaste Magazine, January 2009
read your article titled ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Movie’ with great interest (Salaam Namaste, December 08) and based on the positive comments in the article I went with my entire family to watch the Shah Rukh Khan Flick. I am sorry to say that this was one great disappointment for the entire family. Except for hummable music and great photography, the movie offered nothing of value.
I
have been reading Salaam Namaste magazine since your first issue and I have a suggestion for your ‘Restaurant Review’ feature. I am a foodie and like to eat out at different restaurants both Indian and otherwise. I think I have tried out almost all the restaurants you have featured in your magazine. One thing I noticed in your reviews is that there is no comparative rating of different features of the restaurant. My suggestion to you is to introduce a fivestar rating various aspects such as ambiance, service, food, spice, price/ value for money, etc. This rating will give all the details of the restaurant in a nutshell. I see that you have done this in your restaurant guide section. But these ratings have more relevance in the restaurant review section.
I earnestly urge you to consider giving Koti Venkateshwara Rao unbiased opinions when you write about big Frisco, Tx movies featuring mega stars in future. This will save us a lot of time and money and enhance Thank you very much for the suggestion. We the image of your magazine too. will definitely introduce ratings soon. — Editor Ibrahim Kazi Lewsiville The movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a total entertainer and has been doing successfully both in India and the US. Shah Rukh Khan movies are all about glamour and entertainment and this one is no different. Our opinion of the movie is that it’s screenplay and music were great, an assertion you agreed with. — Editor
Adrenaline pumping article
I
am a regular reader of your magazine and I must say that my favorite section is ‘Joyful Travel’.This months article “Been There! Dune That!” (SN, December ‘08) has been the best so far. I’m impressed by the way the author conveys his experience of travelling through the desert. As I read through the feature I felt as if I myself was experiencing the thrills and chills of dune bashing. The fantastic pictures added great visual appeal to the article. 10

W
ishing you all a very happy and prosperous new year 2009! This time of the year is synonymous with making new resolutions for the year ahead. What kind of resolutions do we make? Most people usually make resolutions to lose weight, to study harder, to make more money, to work harder or get a promotion at work.
It is rare to hear someone make an altruistic resolution like: “I will help 100 people get better jobs this year!” or “I will spend 2 hours every week at the senior citizens home!” or “I will volunteer for the local animal shelter this year!” This kind of social or charitable work often takes the last priority in our lives. In reality, it should take up the first priority, because often while helping of others we are actually helping ourselves. I would like to recount a small story to illustrate this adage. A man once spoke with the Lord about heaven and hell. The Lord said to the man, “Come, I will show you hell.” They entered a room where a group of people sat around a huge pot of stew. Everyone was famished, desperate and starving. Each held a spoon that reached pot, but each spoon had a handle so much longer than their own arm that it could not be used to get the stew into their own mouths. The suffering was terrible. “Come, now I will show you heaven,” the lord said after a while. They entered another room, identical to the first pot of stew, the group of people, and the same long-handled spoons. But there everyone was happy and well nourished. “I don’t understand” said the man, “Why are they happy here and they were miserable in hell, where everything is the same?” The Lord smiled. “Ah, it is simple,” he said, “Here they have learned to feed each other.” Similarly in our life, the more we try to help others, the more we will be helped. This year I urge you to make a resolution to help others, serve the society, or do something that makes a difference in this world. Waiting to hear from you about your New Year Resolutions, I sign off!

North American Hindus Call for a New Dialogue on Terrorism
M
embers of various South Asian communities of Dallas-Fort Worth, TX came together to perform a Shanti Homam (ceremony of peace) to pray for peace for those affected by the heinous terrorist attack on Mumbai City in India (November 26-29, 2008). Terrorists killed over 180 and injured more than 400 innocent people including tourists and security force personnel. “The terrorist attack is a stark reminder that Terrorism continues to be one of the greatest dangers to the future of the democratic and secular society of India in particular and the world at large,” said Kalyan Viswanathan, president, Sanatana Dharma Foundation (SDF), Dallas, TX.
The Shanti Homam at the DFW Hindu Temple, Irving, TX attracted members of over 30 Hindu organizations from the DFW metro area, as well as members of Jewish and Islamic faiths. During the solemn ceremony, prayers for world peace and solace for the affected

Speaking on the occasion, Ranna Jani, President of the DFW Hindu Temple, Irving,TX commented: “We come together to look into the eyes of terror and say we stand together as one people of the world in support of humanity - Not in despair or hopelessness, but rather in love, strength, resolve, and peace for the present and the future.” “Hindus and Jews have a lot in common. We both have suffered the travails of Partition and ongoing terrorism,” said Rabbi Goeffrey W. Dennis of the Congregation Kol Ami, who attended the Vedic Prayer at the DFW Hindu

“As North American Hindus, we are extremely disturbed by this horrible terrorist attack on Mumbai. Our hearts bleed for the departed souls and families who have lost their loved ones, and the injured. We need an approach to solve the problem of Terrorism once and for all,” said Kalyan Viswanathan president, SDF. The Homam was attended by over 150 people including members of several nonprofit organizations such as FoundationAgainst Continuing Terrorism, Denton County India Cultural Association, and SEWA International. Similar Homam ceremonies were also offered in many cities in USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Weekend Course on Basics of Hinduism
T
he Center for Spiritual Living, Addison, TX in association with Dallas Chapter of Barsana Dham conducted a two-day course on the ‘Basics of Hinduism for Children and their parents’ on December 13 and 14, 2008. Over 85 children along with their parents attended the programme organized under the aegis of the Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat (JKP), Barsana Dham, one of the largest Hindu Temple complexes in North America.
“When his flawless recital of most sacred Sanskrit hymns resound in your ears, I bet, you cannot figure out that he is not born Hindu. He has not only simply stunned me but also made me think about my own religion, the things I have been doing without thinking much? I never knew there was so much more to Hinduism,” says Divyesh Patel, an Irvingbased parent of two kids who attended the course.
The program featured interactive sessions on religion, philosophy and spirituality by Swami Nikhilanand, an American-born sanyasi teacher of JKP. The aim of the program was to answer the numerous questions children ask about Hindu religion and culture. Most parents would find these questions difficult to answer. Questions such as “Why do innocent people suffer?”; “What is the proof that God exists?”; “Why is Hinduism the only religion that describes God’s form?”; “What will I gain by following Hinduism?” etc were fielded effectively by Swami Nikhilanand. Concurrent sessions on Hindu Scriptures, Hind Saints, God, You and I, and The many forms of God were conducted separately for parents and children. Both days featured vibrant question-answer sessions which seemed never ending.
Founded by Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj, a highly respected spiritual teacher from India, revered as the fifth original Jagadguru in the last five thousand years, JKP is a non-profit organization religious and educational organization with several humanitarian projects in India and the US.

Dev Anand’s full name is Devdutt Pishorimal Anand. Dev Anand and Nutan’s four-film association (Paying Guest, Baarish and Manzil were the other three) culminated with Tere Ghar Ke Saamne. Zarine, now better known as actor Sanjay Khan’s wife Zarine Khan, played Dev Anand’s anglicised secretary in Tere Ghar Ke Saamne. This was Zarine’s only film as an actress. Tere Ghar Ke Saamne was Nutan’s comeback film after the birth of Mohnish Behl. Mohammed Rafi sung the song Dil Ka Bhanwar Kare Pukar from the film Tere Ghar Ke Saamne after a few retakes… something very rare for him. Tere Ghar Ke Saamne was director Vijay Anand’s only full length comedy. Ram Lakhan was produced by Subhash Ghai’s brother Ashok Ghai. Ram Lakhan is still remembered for its launch performed in the hill station of Khandala where 300 V.V.I.P. guests were invited for a three day stay to witness the event. With Ram Lakhan - a star was born: Madhuri Dixit. The chart buster song “My name is Lakhan” was recorded with only 72 Rhythm Instruments and no vocal or string instrument was used in its composition. The screenplay of the film was declared as a text book by critics and got many awards. Ram Lakhan is a copy of Deewar and earlier - Mother India. Saira Banu made her debut in the film Shagird. Saira Banu’s mother Naseem Bano was the first beauty queen of Bollywood. Saira Banu stopped acting the day she met her husband by chance at the airport when one of them was going for a shoot and the other was coming back. That’s where they met after three months and realisation dawned. Saira was linked to Rajendra Kumar before she abruptly married Dilip Kumar. Saira last acted in Duniya in a cameo opposite Dilip Kumar.

BOLLYWOOD Gossip A.R. Rahman copies music?
M
ani Ratnam and A.R. Rahman have given many a musical hit together such as Roja, Bombay, Dil Se, Yuva, and most recently Guru. Every time the famous South Indian director thinks of making a film, he can think of no one else but Rahman to compose the soundtrack. However, it appears that for Mani Ratnam’s new film, Rahman seems to have borrowed some tunes: from himself! Rahman had composed some tunes for Mani Ratnam’s now shelved project Lajjo. The film was to star Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles, but due to certain reasons never took off. Now, the buzz has it that a few of the songs which Rahman had composed for Lajjo would be used by Rahman in Mani Ratnam’s current project Raavana. Mani is once again directing the famous Abhi-Ash jodi in this drama and when Rahman approached Mani with the thought of using some of his earlier composed songs (from Lajjo) in this film, Mani readily agreed. One thing’s for sure, if the music of Raavana turns out to be a chartbuster, Aamir and Kareena will surely rue their luck!
Asin, the pop star?
A
t home, she is a docile conservative South Indian girl. But put her on stage and she transforms into a cool chic rock singer with a guitar in her hands and a song on her lips. Apparently, that’s the girl Asin plays in London Dreams. According to sources, there are two separate looks for her Londoner’s character: The traditional South Indian look, and the rock singer who takes off with her friends to jam and groove to funky beats.
Kareena says goodbye to ‘Size 0’
I
n her next release Kambakth Ishq, Kareena plays a surgeon who moonlights as a supermodel. A surgeon who’s a super-model? Sounds like a deadly combination to us. “Yeah my character flies to Italy to become a super-model to support herself financially.I didn’t want to play the character looking like an international model because she’s basically in another profession. So she can’t really have the figure of Victoria Beckham, can she? I had to look more filled up. Again, for my next release Main Aur Mrs Khanna with Salman Khan, I play a wife. So I wanted to look more filled up. Not that wives can’t be slim. The one I played in Golmaal Returns certainly was.” For her forthcoming films ‘Size 0’ is out. No more anorexic looks for this lass. Kareena Kapoor is now striving to have a healthy desi girl’s figure.
Though producer-director Vipul Shah isn’t revealing anything, it is reliably learnt that Asin, who makes her transition from Tamil-Telugu to Hindi cinema, even gets to sing in her own voice and play the guitar in London Dreams. About her leading role in the film, Asin is totally tightlipped. “All I can say is, it’s something I’ve never played before. In fact, I think it’s a role never seen in Indian cinema. Beyond that, I can’t talk about it. But I’m very excited about both Ghajini and London Dreams. I’ve a long list of criteria for selecting a role beginning with the director, banner and co-star and ending with the cinematographer...I want them all to be just right. Am I being greedy? Perhaps. I’m sorry. I can’t settle for anything but the best,” said Asin with a smile.
Reason? “My forthcoming releases required me to get back to a fuller shape. Plus, I’m such a foodie, I just couldn’t stay away from my fried foods anymore!” she laughs. Now Kareena has decided to hold steady with her new weight. “I weigh 120 pounds now, which for a girl of my height is quite fine. People used to wonder what ‘Size 0’ is and I’d joke, ‘Just look at me’. I don’t want that anymore. I want to look like a nice normal healthy girl.”
Anil’s Golden Globe nod
D
anny Boyle’s much appreciated drama Anil Kapoor-starrer Slumdog Millionaire has been nominated for Best Motion Picture (Drama) at the Golden Globe awards. The Golden Globes are considered as a predecessor to the much more prestigious Academy awards, and films which usually find a nomination at the Golden Globe more often than not make the final cut at the Oscars. Slumdog Millionaire, which has been making the rounds of film festivals for a while now, tells the story of a slum boy who goes on to take part in a quiz game show. The film released in the US recently and has received both critical and commercial success. Recently, the film also won 3 top awards at the British Independent Film awards. With this prestigious Golden Globe nomination, the makers now surely have their eyes set on the next big thing — an Oscar nomination. Salaam Namaste Magazine, January 2009

he first shooting schedule of Ashutosh Gowariker’s romantic comedy What’s Your Raashee? commenced in Mumbai recently. The entire movie will be shot in a single start-toend schedule and stars Love Story 2050 pair Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja in the lead roles.
What’s Your Raashee? is based on a Gujarati novel Kimball Ravenswood by Madhu Rye, and is a story revolving around a young Gujarati man in pursuit of his dream girl, with the caveat to find her within 10 days in order to save his family from an unforeseen ordeal, which leads to an array of confusion, chaos, and a hilarious joy ride. Apparently, Ashutosh Gowariker is not at all worried that the pair’s previous flop pairing will affect What’s Your Raashee? in any way. “They were the two best actors for the script. Why should I be concerned that a different film, in which they played different characters, happened to fail at the box office?,” the filmmaker claims.
talks about life post Fashion and how she had almost lost control of her life a while back.
That’s not all the juicy scoop she gives though. While she speaks fondly about her first ever director Anurag Basu (Gangster) and acknowledges that it was his faith in her that turned her into an actor that she is today, she reveals that she shares a love-hate relationship with Mohit Suri (Woh Lamhe, Raaz - The Mystery Continues), and how Madhur Bhandarkar (Fashion) would make her feel special during the filming and how he would get her chocolates. However, a true shocker comes in the statement that she makes about Suneel Darshan, the man who paired her opposite Upen Patel in the musical Shakalaka Boom Boom. She says, “Suneel Darshan gave me the worst time of my life during Shakalaka Boom Boom. They didn’t even pay me for it. I felt really bad but it’s okay now.” What does Suneel Darshan, the man who has worked with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Sunny Deol, Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu and Bobby Deol, have to say about this accusation? Especially when the statement is being made more than one and a half years after the film has been released?!? “Frankly, I can’t stoop to her level and she doesn’t really deserve a reply,” Darshan diplomatically states. Isn’t he disappointed with such a remark? “See, any retaliation will open up too many controversies, and there is no sense washing dirty linen in public. Let bygones be bygones. I too wish to move ahead with hope and a positive outlook towards life,” sighs Darshan. He has a final word though. “Surely, if she has a conscience, she will regret her disgusting behavior. Else, forget it!”
Katrina Kaif voted ‘Sexiest Woman’
T
here is no denying the fact that Katrina Kaif is among the most sought after actresses in Bollywood today. After all, in the recent past, Katrina has been part of such superhits as Partner, Namastey London, Welcome, and
Singh Is Kinng. Now, the gorgeous actress has added not just one, but two special feathers to her already impressive cap. Last week, Katrina was voted the ‘Sexiest Asian Woman’ for the year 2008 in a poll conducted by Eastern Eye, a well read publication in the U.K. Last year’s winner Bipasha Basu has now been pushed to the second spot. Just as accolades started pouring in for this feat, Katrina was in for yet another piece of good news. Katrina features among the Top 10 in 3 different categories in Google’s 2008 India Zeitgeist lists, a compilation of most searched terms on the internet released every year. While Katrina tops the ‘Most Popular Bollywood Celebrity’ category, she figures at No.3 in the ‘Fast Rising Searches’ category

and at No.10 in the ‘Most Popular Searches’ category. In fact, she is the only person to feature in the Top 10 ‘Most Popular Searches’ category which otherwise features topics as diverse as Cricket to Indian Railways. A source close to Katrina said, “Katrina’s popularity is catching up with the masses in a big way. People are mesmerized by her beauty. Several of her fans have kept Kats’ pics as screensavers and wallpapers. Her smile, they say, is like an oasis in a desert. It helps them feel relaxed when they feel down at work.” Katrina obviously is thrilled at this turn of developments.“I have to thank my fans for their constant love and support. BOLLYWOOD Hitlist Salaam Namaste’s Ali Fazal gives you this month’s most salacious gossip
1. Looks like Miss Deepika Padukone is turning into a bit of a diva—and not the good kind. Word on the street is that Deepika threw a major fit at the music launch for her new film, Akshay Kumar-starrer Chandni Chowk to China. It was discovered after the fact that Dips was furious that she was barely featured in the
displayed film artwork at the event, and that most of the coverage was going to Akshay Kumar and Ranvir Shorey. Since Deepika has a barely-there ‘running around trees’ heroine role in the film, we think she should hold her tongue before complaining about the press given to the two main heroes. 2. Dino Morea has apparently been giving Shubir S. Mukerji, producer of last month’s release Gumnaam, hell for the past five years, and isn’t apologizing for it. Dino was ranting and raving to all the tabloids that he wanted nothing to do with the stale muchdelayed film, and that he didn’t like the way it was being promoted. Producer Mukerji countered by saying that the film was only delayed because Dino refused to dub for the longest time. With few hits on your record and no forthcoming films in your kitty Dino, you should be grateful for any release, no matter how ‘stale’ it might seem.
3. Jiah Khan is supposedly seeing red. The sexy starlet, who debuted opposite Amitabh Bachchan in 2005’s Nishabd, claims that her role in last month’s hit Ghajini was completely slashed in the editing room. Her claim is that she was narrated a co-leading role opposite Aamir Khan, and ended up doing a glorified cameo. Let’s hope her forthcoming Yash Raj project opposite Shahid Kapur and Rani Mukherji will fare better for her! 4. Katrina Kaif can be quite a sweetheart when she wants to be. The actress was apparently a last-minute replacement for original December Vogue covergirl Kangana Ranaut. After Ranaut played truant, Kat traveled 20 hours from the States (where she is currently shooting with John Abraham for New York) for the 3-hour shoot, then flew 20 hours back so that she could make her call-time for shooting the next day. Nice to see some professionalism in Bollywood, where showing up late and throwing tantrums seems to be the order of the day. 5. Hollywood actress Denise Richards seems to have a bit of a superiority complex. When shooting for Kambakht Ishq in Los Angeles last week, she apparently used Kareena Kapoor’s personal assistant to run all around the city of angels running errands for her dogs! When confronted by Kareena regarding this matter, Denise just gave an insincere shrug. Looks like those ‘Kambakht’ divas stateside are as dangerous as those in Bollywood!

MOVIE Preview Yet Another Film on Global Terror Movie Name: New York Cast: John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh Director: Kabir Khan
N
ewYork is one film that has been kept under wraps since its filming started in early 2008.The film features a high profile cast including the svelte, sizzling, and sexy Katrina Kaif and heartthrob John Abraham. If the promos are to be believed, New York promises to be a real blockbuster. Yash Raj films, the banner which gave us hits like Rab Ne Bana di Jodi, etc is making this movie too. Kabir Khan has taken up the responsibility of directing this movie. The film also features the self- assured but unassuming Neil Nitin Mukesh. Typical of the modus operandi of Yash Raj films, this film has been carefully kept under wraps for almost the whole production period. Now that New York is in post-production, some news is out, but only enough to arouse curiosity of audiences, New York is expected to release globally in early 2009. The film handles the theme of how innocent people can get entangled in a larger global terror conspiracy and suffer. New York is a contemporary

story of friendship set against the larger than life backdrop of a city often described as the center of the world. For most of us, larger events in the world are just headlines in the newspapers, but these events can change our lives forever. New York is one such story of three young friends (John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh) whose happy and beautiful lives in America are turned upside down by monumental events beyond their control.

HEALTHCARE Stress Test to detect onset of Heart Disease with Dr. Srinivas Gunukula
C
oronary Heart disease (CAD) remains the number one killer around the world. People from Indian subcontinent are at 3-4 times higher risk for developing CAD when compared to other populations. Among people from Indian subcontinent, those who have the history of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and family history of CAD are the ones particularly at risk. The global medical community is yet to arrive at a consensus as far as the right age to start screening for heart disease. However, in my opinion, people 50 and above should have a stress test. It does not mean that you cannot have stress test earlier. Your physician will be the best judge to decide when a person needs a stress test. I would recommend, people have a stress test at age 50 and then every 3-5 years if the initial test was normal, provided you do not have any new symptoms in between. If you develop a chest pain or shortness of breath after within a year of normal stress test you will have to undergo the test again. The Stress test is an indirect means of determining if a patient has coronary artery disease. It is also used as a test for risk stratification after people have suffered heart attacks and also to monitor people who have have established coronary artery disease. There are numerous ways of administering a stress test. The most common
one is the exercise stress test. It involves walking on a treadmill or riding a exercise bicycle. During the test, there is continuous monitoring of your electrocardiogram (ECG), heart rate, and blood pressure. It is a very safe test. The chance of having any complications during the test is 1 in 25,000. During the test if a person feels any chest pain, dizziness or shortness of breath you need to notify the doctor or nurse immediately. At this juncture, the concerned health care worker will take steps either to stop the test or slow down the treadmill. For people who cannot walk on treadmills the doctor might recommend chemical stress test in which chemicals are injected into the body to simulate exercise. The stress tests are not 100 percent accurate. The regular exercise stress test is only 60 percent accurate. The remaining 40 percent can be falsely negative or positive. Your doctor might add imaging to the exercise or chemical stress test. Imaging may include either echocardiogram (Ultrasound) or nuclear (Thallium) imaging. One of the main reasons, they add imaging is to improve the accuracy of the test. By adding imaging, the test accuracy goes up to 85-90 percent, leaving only a 10-15 percent margin of error. I feel that the benefits of a stress test far outweigh its risks.
The other upcoming modality is Magnetic resonance coronary angiography (also known as MRI) which is still considered a research tool despite being a very promising technique. MRI’s main drawbacks are high cost and it consumes lot of time. Summing up, I would like to say that screening for CAD is a very good method to prevent the onset of heart disease. There are new and more reliable techniques with a promise to change the future of CAD screening within the next few years.
There are new and evolving technologies that will play a prominent role in screening for CAD. The coronary computed tomographic (also known as CT or CAT scan) angiography is one such modality. It is useful, however it is still not considered as a reliable screening tool. The disadvantage with CT angiography is that it involves lot of radiation (X-Rays). For instance one coronary CT angiography provides the amount of radiation that is equivalent to 500 chest X-Rays. handni Chowk To China, the first ever Bollywood Kung-Fu comedy takes you on a madcap journey from the by-lanes of Chandni Chowk in Delhi to Shanghai, the Great Wall, and rural China, marrying in its wake hilarious gags, breathtaking action, spectacular locations, and heart-stirring emotions. Our protagonist Sidhu (Akshay Kumar- Singh is Kinng, Waqt) is the lowest on the totem pole, cutting vegetables at a roadside food stall in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. He longs to escape his dreary existence and looks for shortcuts- with astrologers, tarot readers and fake fakirs — believing in anything except himself, despite his father figure Dada’s (Mithun Chakraborty — Lucky, Heroes) best efforts. His redeeming moment arrives when two strangers, claiming he’s a reincarnation of a war hero from the past, take him to China for a life of luxury. Sidhu now dreams of wine, women, and a princely existence in foreign lands. Thanks to the devious translator, a conman by the name Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey- Ugly aur Pagli), little does he know that he is being taken to the Promised Land to rid the Chinese village of the vicious smuggler Hojo (Gordon Liu- Kill Bill Vol. 2)! Therefore, Sidhu blissfully sets forth to China with Chopstick who instigates dreams of a delicious future and conveniently forgets to reveal the perils that await him. Along the way, he meets Sakhi (Deepika PadukoneOm Shanti Om, Bachna Ae Haseeno), who has embarked on a journey to pay homage to the land of her birth and her dead father and twin. Initially Sidhu, through a series of lucky coincidences, manages to sidestep being beaten by Hojo’s men but finally Hojo catches up with him and exposes him as the country buffoon that he really is. Sidhu has the fire of revenge in his belly and finds the one man who will make him a Kung-Fu expert and set the village free. Armed with his Sifu (master), faith in himself, and the love of the fair Sakhi, Sidhu sets forth to conquer all! The film was supposed to be titled Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo or Made in China, but somehow ended up with the more apt title it has now. Written by Sridhar Raghavan of Khakee (2004) and Bluffmaster (2005) fame, Chandni Chowk to China is somewhat like the story of Akshay Kumar’s life. In fact, the star himself agreed that about 50 percent of the film is based on his own experiences. For the first time, South Indian beauty Deepika Padukone will be essaying a double role: as a Chinese Woman and an Indian Woman. Chinese superstar Gordon Liu is making his Bollywood debut in this movie and promises loads of Kung-Fu action! That makes it all the more watchable for Akki’s fans. President Obama brings Hope for South Asians! By Ali Fazal
E
veryday now, when we open our newspapers and turn on our television sets, we seem to be greeted by depressing news — economic slowdown, foreclosures, bankruptcies, layoffs, and more. Judging just by the economic state of our country, it appears that we have nothing to look forward to. Insiders predict that the market will continue to plunge for a number of months, and with the combination of the constantly dropping value of our dollar and the increase in airline ticket prices and surcharges, it seems like escaping for a nice vacation no longer seems a viable option. However, the idea that the current climate offers nothing but gloom is far from the truth. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be South Asian. Let’s be excited people! Barack Obama is our new president-elect, and with him comes tons of new propositions and legislative ideas that could aid the cause of South Asians worldwide. With a new president who is extremely supportive of our community’s needs, the next four years might finally cement the status of South Asians in mainstream American society for generations to come. Here are some of the areas which are going to change for the desi community. Immigration
O
ne of the biggest gripes voiced by our community is the lack of status. By status, I don’t mean standing in society. Immigration issues have plagued our people in the U.S ever since heavy immigration by South Asians started in the mid-1970s. However, good news for all Desis out there who want to bring their parents, grandparents, wives, husbands, and the like thousands of miles to America. President Obama has a very unique strategy to tackle our community’s immigration issues. Instead of focusing on preventing illegal immigration by deporting people left and right (which was a cornerstone of President Bush’s two terms), he wants to work on making legal immigration easier. Allowing more people to get visas and entry will prevent the cases we see daily of South Asians ‘accidentally’ overstaying their term and being unable to access gainful employment, and then getting deported. www.SNMonthly.com
Tel: 972-401-1550
Hate Crimes
O
ne of the most important things to note is Obama’s continual support of the South Asian community when he was a Senator in Illinois. He had six South Asian individuals on his staff, a rarity when compared to the mainly white landscape of politics in the USA. After all, being a minority running for the most powerful office in the world, President Obama certainly understands the pitfalls that discriminatory attitudes can cause. It is for this reason that he plans to introduce legislation which will cause for stronger punishment in hate crimes. Hopefully with this legislation passed, South Asian children will no longer have to worry about abuse or mistreatment by ignorant individuals in public schools or being labeled ‘terrorists’. Family centered
E
ven when looking at President Obama’s family structure, it is clear that he shares many common views with the Desi community. In a day and age when political children can get away with hard partying and drinking (we’re looking at you Jenna Bush!), Obama has high hopes for his daughters, Sasha and Malia. He claims that both will have daily chores to perform at the White House (walking the dogs, cleaning their own rooms and bathrooms, and ironing clothes are among them), and that they will not lead a life of gratuitous luxury. They will continue to live on a modest allowance of $20 per week. As it stands today,we don’t have much to look forward to with the dank winter months upon us. We have an economy that’s sinking deeper into a black hole on a daily basis, and a country divided on many issues. However, there is one thing for the South Asian community to be excited for. With President Obama’s inauguration approaching rapidly, we have the potential for hope. Hope for our community to prosper. Hope for the country to re-unite as a people. And most importantly, hope for ourselves that we can live the best lives possible. 53

NATURAL HEALTH NATUROPATHY: Healing System of the future
M
odern world is full of controversies and disagreements. It is rare to find two people agreeing on the same topic and this is especially true when it comes to health professionals. At this juncture I would like to raise one issue which is unlikely to encounter disagreements: health for all by 2000 AD. South Asian cultural heritage is replete with numerous Shashatras and Puranas which dish out the basic tenets of life. These ancient texts contain tips and advise on how an individual should relate to the family, the society, the country etc. These books also provide valuable guidelines on how to leverage these important facets of our lives to lead healthy and happy life. Meaning of happiness
T
o emphasize how happiness is different for every individual, I would like to relate the story of a happy man and the unhappy king. The king in the story was an unhappy individual, even though he had limitless wealth, servants and all comforts at his disposal. He was constantly worried about losing his wealth, kingdom and position and this led him to become unhappy and insomniac. Numerous doctors, vaidyas and hakims tried their medicines but the King continued to spend sleepless nights. Finally one of his courtiers brought a renowned spiritual healer who promised to suggest a cure for the king’s insomnia. The spiritual healer examined the king and advised him to get a used shirt from a
happy man in his kingdom and wear it for a day. Immediately all the soldiers started going around and ask people if they are happy. But nobody was happy due to one reason or the other. Finally they found a young man breaking stones in the field who said that he was happy with his life. Soldiers took him to their ruler. The king was delighted to see the man and asked for his shirt, but the poor fellow had no shirt. The emperor thought about the message of the spiritual and understood its inner meaning after this interaction. The spiritual healer had meant the attitude and not the physical shirt and one doesn’t need riches to feel happy. Naturopathy – An introduction
E
ven before allopathic system of medicine became popular people were living healthy and happy. And several thousand people continue to live a healthy, happy and disease free life even to this day without relying upon any medicine. These people lead lifestyles which are close to the nature. Due to rapid industrialization and advancement people have moved away from nature and their food habits also changed drastically. As a result immune systems have become weak. Allopathic system of medicine started as an alternative medicine in its beginning years when natural systems of medicine dominated the space. But things have changed drastically and now allopathic medicine has become mainstream and most sought after now. As a result ancient mainstream systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Naturopathy, and Homoeopathy have become alternative therapies today. Frequent use of allopathic treatments started with quinine for malaria, penicillin for syphilis and pneumonia among others. But with the onset of cancer and AIDS allopathic system seems to have became helpless and people have begun once again to look for alternative therapies. This quest has led to a resurgence of Naturopathy in recent times. I am quite certain that Naturopathy will be the healing system of 21st century. Naturopathy

There are numerous physical afflictions which allopathic medicine cannot cure. People often head towards alternative medicines such as Naturopathy and surprisingly find cures. Naturopathy doesn’t use drugs or chemicals and the patient leverages his diet to achieve cure on advise from a naturopath. Naturopathy is a holistic healing approach to any physical affliction. This healing system doesn’t consider any symptoms or illness in isolation. The basic needs of body and associated systems are considered along with diet for the Nutritional Management of patient’s body. A manipulative treatment and massage also plays an important role in Natural cure. Naturopathy can be used more efficiently as a preventive therapy for many orthopedic problems. Naturopathy is a way of life and suggests a change in lifestyle as treatment and cure for chronic ailments such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. It is proven fact that the human body can perform any of its normal functions and maintain normal metabolism only when specific nutrients are consumed regularly in proper proportions. Back-pain, asthma, eczema, acne, vitiligo, arthritis, ulcers, psoriasis, migraine etc are some of the common body ailments for which there are hardly any medical cures but only alternative therapies like Naturopathy can have a solution. As mentioned earlier Naturopathy lays emphasis on diet. But in spite of apparently higher standard of living and personal hygiene there are problems. People are prone to food poisoning or an illness brought about by eating harmful food. Naturopathy takes care of most of these problems while prescribing the diet for the person. Thus proper use of preventive diet along-with yoga and could be the drugless solution with minimum expenses could be the remedy for better health for all in 21st century. Complementary to Naturopathy are other methods such as Acupressure, Spiritual Healing, Bach flower remedies, Reiki, Chromotherapy, Mechanotherapy, Biochemistry, Aromatherapy and Bowen therapy, which will be the methods in near future for solving health problems of human beings. Summing up, we need to remember that Naturopathy will be the therapy system which will help people achieve health and happiness. Salaam Namaste Magazine, January 2009

Underground Adventure
Srinidhi Raghavendra remembers spending a weekend exploring one of the longest underground cave systems back home in India. His memories of being awed by amazing natural stalagmite and stalactite formation deep underground and experiences of cold, clammy depths are indeed interesting.
I
t isn’t everyone’s idea of a great way to spend the weekend. Spending three days exploring one of the longest underground cave systems in the sub-continent? Did I hear a shudder? Cold, clammy caves deep under the earth’s surface infested with bats and other nasty creatures of the night? Yes, all that, but there’s also a touch of adventure and the thrill of exploring a new facet of the world. So, after a few arguments and counter-arguments, we decided to hit the road and visit the Belum caves in Andhra Pradesh — South India’s second longest underground cave system.
From Lepakshi we proceeded towards Belum and reached there in the late afternoon. Located in the limestone area in the Kolimigundla Mandal (Kolimigundla village) of Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, the 2.1 mile long Belum Cave derives its name from the Sanskrit word Bilum (cave). These underground caves, located amidst
flat agricultural lands, have three sinkholes, of which the central one has been converted into the main entrance with a neat flight of steps for people to enter. After buying the tickets (Rs.25 or $.60 per person) we lined up as a group in front of the main entrance to the cave for a guided tour. The guide took us down a concrete
We started off from Bangalore at about 9.30 am on a Friday and proceeded towards Andhra Pradesh. After passing through several small towns such as Devanahalli, Chikkaballapur, Penukonda (Andhra Pradesh), we reached Lepakshi and decided to take a breather and explore the sprawling antiquated Veerabhadra temple. According to the Archaeological Survey of India, this temple has some of the best mural paintings and stone sculptures of the Vijayanagara era (13361646 AD). The intricately-carved massive monolithic idols of Ganesha and Shiva Linga inside the temple and the 30 ft tall Nandi statue nearby are awe inspiring. www.SNMonthly.com

staircase about 30 ft below ground level, where the caves started. Inside the caves it was like a furnace, despite the fresh air supplied by blowers installed by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC). But soon the excitement and beauty of the caves took our minds away from the heat and discomfort, and instead got us involved in admiring the well-lit and neatly maintained passages embellished with
fountains and strategically placed lighting. The lighting gives the natural formations an eerie glow and makes walking through the vast subterranean passages an invigorating experience. Marvelling at nature’s wonderful formations, we quickly made our way through the different pathways in the cave. Through the high and low, thick and thin passages (noting the various landmarks inside), we went on and on, sometimes crawling, other times squeezing through and easing ourselves slowly through the really narrow passages. The ageless stalactite and stalagmite formations are breathtakingly beautiful.
inside the cave was unbroken except by the quiet gurgle of flowing water in some passages. As we went deeper into the caves, the guide explained that though a length of 2.1 km has been successfully explored, only 1 mile is currently open for visitors. After taking us through a maze of underground passages, the guide took us through the Simhadwaram — an natural arch-like formation whose stalactites appear like the head of a lion — into the a narrow passage which leads into a large 25 X 15 ft chamber known as Kotilingam Chamber aka Kotilingalu, so called as it contains
I must say that the AP Tourism has done a really wonderful job in restoring the caves and opening them for public. The wellplanned illumination rids the caves of its typical claustrophobic feel and creates a brightness that enhances their splendor. The silence Salaam Namaste Magazine, January 2009

From here a further downward passage took us to ‘Patalaganga’, the deepest part of the cave where there is a perennial spring of water, above which a stalagmite formation resembling the phallic form of lord Shiva is present. The water flows from the southeast to northwest, disappearing into the depths of the earth. The guide further explained that the water flows toward a well at the Belum village, about 1.2 miles away. The fluctuation in the water-level in the well is linked to the level in the caves as the invisible spring formed due to percolation of water is said to feed the well too. he earliest record about existence of the caves was made in 1884 by a European explorer Robert Bruce Foote. Later, between 1982-84, a team of German speleologists, headed by H. Daniel Gebauer conducted a detailed exploration of the caves. The German expedition was assisted by locals B. Chalapathi Reddy, Ramaswami Reddy, Boyu Madduleti, K. Padmanabhaiah, K. Chinnaiah and A. Sunkanna. In 1988, the state government came to know of the archaeological and geological importance of the area and declared it protected. Later from 1999-2002, APTDC developed the caves as a tourist attraction. Development works including clearing up the slush inside, creation of walking paths, illumination, and construction oxygen shafts, etc were commissioned, and the caves were first thrown open for visitors in February 2002. Belum Caves – Fact file Timings: 10 am to 5 pm.
Compulsory guides: Visitors are not allowed to venture into the caves on their own. Trained guides take groups of 10-15 tourists into the caves at a time. Entry Fee: Rs.25 (US $0.65) per person. Fast Paced Action and Intriguing Mystery Digital Fortress by Dan Brown; Corgi Books; Price: Rs.567; 510 pp
of the Latin aphorism quis custodiet ipsos custodes (who will guard the guardians?), he tries to go public about TRANSLTR and its capability with the help of Electronic Frontier Foundation — an online group of people championing the right to privacy — but is captured, accused of spying and deported to Japan. To take revenge for his disgraceful exit from the NSA and US,Tankado designs Digital Fortress and unleashes it on TRANSLTR.
D
an Brown author of The Da Vinci Code (which has been on the New York Times bestsellers list for an unprecedented three years) is assured of a place of honor in book publishing history. This religious history thriller, which advances an outrageous proposition, has spawned a cult following and several connected industries. To cash in on the outstanding success the Da Vinci Code, publishers not surprisingly reprinted his earlier works, expecting newly won Brown fans to lap them up with the same enthusiasm. This reviewer bought the reprinted Digital Fortress expecting a replay of the riveting plot which made Da Vinci Code a transnational bestseller. But unfortunately it pales in comparison. Digital Fortress (first published in 1998), though a la Da Vinci Code is a fast-paced thriller, is set in cyberspace and doesn’t have the same optimal mix of art, adventure, popular history and romance. In Digital Fortress Brown, a former English and creative writing teacher, explores the subject of internet security and how e-mail messages, popularly perceived as a never-before safe and secure mode of instant communication, can be accessed and read by enemy security agencies across the world. It’s a gripping techno-thriller alright, but likely to appeal only to technophiles and computer geeks. The book begins with an emergency within the United States’ National Security Agency (NSA) where its state-of-the-art advanced tech code-breaking computer ‘TRANSLTR’, with more than a million processors, encounters a mysterious code it can’t break. Trevor Strathmore, deputy director of the agency summons NSA head cryptographer, Susan Fletcher, a brilliant mathematician to break the mysterious code. What she uncovers sends shock waves through corridors of governmental power. NSA is being held hostage by software so complex that if not decrypted in time it will cripple America’s global intelligence gathering network. Thus begins a real or rather virtual war in cyberspace, where the ‘bomb’ (an encryption algorithm) will explode, exposing the entire American defence ministry’s intelligence data to any and everyone. The villain in Digital Fortress is Ensie Tankado, a mathematics wizard, encryption software expert and former NSA employee, who scripts a coded algorithm with the www.SNMonthly.com

potential to cripple NSA’s capability of accessing data transmitted on the information superhighway. It is this code which has stumped the TRANSLTR. Born with deformed fingers due to the effects of nuclear radiation his mother suffered when Hiroshima was nuked in 1945, Tankado grows up nurturing a deepseated hatred of the United States. Later, he reads about Japanese war crimes and Pearl Harbor and, his hatred for America slowly fades. He starts learning about computers in his 12th year and by age 20, Tankado is a cult figure among programmers and is offered a job in Texas by IBM. Thereafter, Tankado rides a wave of fame and fortune writing algorithms, prompting the NSA to offer him a job in its crypto team.
Digital Fortress holds the reader’s attention from start to finish, despite some elaborate descriptions of processors and code breaking algorithms, which could put off technophobes. But everyone is likely to experience an uneasiness about the internet and e-mail after reading this book, a feeling born out of the realization that somewhere across the world, someone may be reading your online correspondence. Technophiles on the other hand may get to work on evolving their own unbreakable codes to encrypt their e-mail, in the off chance that a TRANSLTR clone could be eavesdropping. An updated version of Big Brother could be watching!
A human rights activist, Tankado quits the NSA when he learns that through TRANSLTR, the agency can access and open every e-mail message and reseal it without anybody the wiser. A firm believer 65

Absorbing Historical Fiction Set in Ancient India The Courtesan and the Sadhu, A novel about Maya, Dharma, and God by Satya Avatar; Dharma Vision LLC; Price: $20.95; 361

ne of the most difficult challenges that every Hindu parent living in western societies faces is how to educate their children about the complexities of Sanatana Dharma. With its multitudes of gods, numerous texts, hundreds of sampradayas, thousands of religious gurus and numerous regional, caste, and linguistic communities, Hinduism is perhaps the most fragmented religion in the world. One of the reasons for Sanatana Dharma aka Hinduism to be such is its open and accepting philosophy. Hence there is not one straightforward, black and white way by which one can explain all the tenets of Hinduism to children, teenagers, and young adults. This ambiguity in the faith often leads to fundamental questions in a teenager’s mind. This need to explain Hinduism to his teenaged son motivated Satya Avatar, who hails from Mysore, Karnataka (South Indian) to write a novel drawing heavily upon certain historical incidents in India’s history. “More than four years ago, my son came to me and asked me how we related to God in Sanatana Dharma. As I progressed in formulating an answer to my son’s question, it occurred to me that the best way to explain the basic tenets of Sanatana Dharma to my teenage son was to write a novel set in ancient India and explain the tenets through the spiritual journey of the characters in the story,” writes the author who came to the United States in 1978 to pursue graduate studies at State University of New York at Buffalo where he received his Ph.D in 1981. Since then he has worked in the high-tech industry where he has held several technical and management positions in research and development, product management, and marketing. Set in ancient India just after Alexander’s invasion, The Courtesan and the Sadhu takes

the reader through the spiritual journey of two seekers: Kautilya and Manu. The former is a highly learned and erudite Vedic scholar, whose life takes an unexpected detour, and he ends up building the Mauryan Empire. Although successful in re-establishing dharmic values in the Indian subcontinent and getting rid of the vestiges of Alexander’s invasion, he continues to have inner struggles about the path he has chosen. Manu, the other seeker, is an elite warrior in the Mauryan Army but ends up becoming a seeker of Truth at a young age. Disappointed in love, he tries to find answers to his spiritual questions, first as a Buddhist monk and later as a Sadhu. In this story, the author takes the reader through the intriguing journey of the two seekers as they finally overcome Mâya to reach Moksha (emancipation). The book starts off with Kautilya being asked by a Greek (Yavana) general to modify the Vedas and perform a yagna (vedic ceremony) to praise his accomplishments. A completely angry Kautilya decides to take matters into his hands and seek help of the king of Patliputra to chase the Yavanas out of the Arya land (India). “As Kautilya entered Pataliputra, he was surprised to see that it was much larger than he had imagined. It was a well-planned city with large boulevards and stately buildings. The city was bustling with commerce, and trade. There were stores stocked with expensive and fine jewelry, clothes, and furniture. Many stores were selling vegetables, grains, and wine. He could also see many dance halls, restaurants, and temples,” explains the author speaking about Kautilya’s journey. One of the most interesting facets of The Courtesan and the Sadhu of historical fiction is that apart from being an absorbing story,

the book subtly teaches the readers about Hindu theology and scriptures. Written in the deceptively simple style characteristic of American writing Satya Avatar effectively communicates the anger, insecurity, adventure, pains, fears, and wonderment the characters of the story. The author has taken pains to describe in exacting detail the various aspects of his story and how they relate to various aspects of the Sanatana Dharma and its allaccepting philosophy. This book would be highly useful to all those people who wish to learn about Hinduism and its philosophy. “It is interesting to note that for Manu and Kautilya, Dharma without a Creator God was not acceptable, whereas for Chit-Ananda and Chandra Gupta, the existence of a Creator God was immaterial. What mattered to them was the spiritual experience in the material world. The greatness of people of Aryavarta is that they respect and honor all these paths with or without a Creator God,” concludes Satya Avatar in the epilogue of his Magnum Opus.

Bharatanatyam – A Spiritual Dance Form
B
haratanatyam is often referred to as poetry in motion. The esoteric dance form’s origins can be traced to the ancient scriptural work Natya Shastra, by the great sage, Bharata. Deriving its name from its founder, Bharata Natyam is a traditional and stylized dance form, popular in the southern part of India. The practice of this art form is very rigid and there is absolutely no room for any modifications. Bharatanatyam is said to be the oldest of all classical dance forms in India and requires complete involvement of mind, body, and soul. The dance form is known for its grace, purity, tenderness and statuesque postures which uplift the dancer and the beholder to a higher level of spiritual consciousness. The performer is considered as a worshiper of the divine, an embodiment of beauty, charm and grace. Etymologically Bharatanatyam can be split as BHAva (expression); RAga (music); TAla (rhythm) and NATYAM (dance). In essence Bharata Natyam is a fusion of expressions, rhythm and dance performed to the right mix of music.

Origin and history of Bharatanatyam
T
here is a legend associated with how Bharatanatyam was created. According to the legend, Gods and Goddesses requested Lord Brahma, the creator, to write another veda which the common man would be able to understand easily. Lord Brahma considered this request and created the Panchama veda or the Fifth veda known as Natyaveda or the veda of dance. Lord Brahma gave the Natyaveda to sage Bharata and asked him to popularize it among people on earth. Bharata assimilated the Natyaveda and wrote a simplified form of it called Natya Shastra or the Science of Dramaturgy, which till date remains an unparalleled work on the science and technique of drama, dance, and music. This work continues to be the ultimate rulebook for all practitioners of this classical dance form. According to Hindu tradition, it is believed that Lord Shiva as Nataraja (king of dance) is the supreme God of dance. The Dance performed by Lord Shiva is known
as Tandava. There are 7 types of Tandava. The Tandava performed with joy is called Ananda Tandava and when performed in an aggressive mood, it is called Rudra Tandava, which depicts his violent nature as the destroyer of all evil. The dance performed by Goddess Parvathi is known as Lasya, in which the movements are gentle, graceful and sometimes sensuous. Some scholars call Lasya the feminine version of Tandava. here are different styles of Bharatnatyam which basically depends on the region of South India. Some of the most popular styles are: Melattur, Pandanallur, Vazhuvoor (or Vizhuvur), Thanjavoor (or Tanjore), Mysore, and Kanchipooram. The modern Kalakshetra style is a simplified form based on Pandanallur and, to some extent, Thanjavoor styles. The Balasaraswati

CHIROPRACTIC Suggestions

Acorns, Oak Trees, and You
W
hen God made the acorn, he put inside of it the potential and the ability to become a mighty oak tree - a completely unique oak tree, unlike any other that has ever lived or will ever live again. Each acorn needs just a few things in order to realize its potential. It needs some sun, air, water, good nutrition from the soil, and one more thing…
It needs to be free from interference so that the innate processes that grow it from acorn to an oak tree can progress. What does this amazing journey of an Acorn to Oak Tree have to do with you and your life? Our Chiropractic philosophy teaches us that we are all just like acorns. It says that God gave each and every one of us a very special and unique purpose as well. This is our potential. And, just like the acorn, in order for you and your family to reach your potential, you require a few things as well. You need some sun, air, water, good nutrition, and one thing more… You must be free from interference in your nerve systems so that you can fully express your Life Force and move
continually toward the realization of your purpose and potential in life! How does a Broken bone Heal? How did your body “know how to make itself” from 2 Cells to 100 Trillion? Your body is well orchestrated, regulated, and highly intelligent. The body’s computer (Brain) sends vital messages to the body through the vast ‘inner-network’ of wires (Nerves). When your brain and body can fully communicate through the nerves, your “Innate Intelligence” can more accurately comprehend and respond to all of the physical, chemical, and emotional stresses you encounter in your life. This allows you to better adapt to those stresses, heal any injuries you may have, and continue growing and unfolding into whatever you are ultimately meant to be. When you have a clear connection you HAVE: More Energy, Better Digestion, More Focus, Stronger Immune System, and other wonderful feelings that are created by having a properly functioning body. If you lose the shape, movement, or alignment of your spine (due to poor diet, injury, birth process, falls, and even emotional stress) you actually interfere with the communication and connection from your brain to your body’s 100 Trillion Cells. This state of partial disconnection is called being “Subluxated” (Sub-lux-ated, literally “Less Light”). The subluxation process interferes with normal communication between your brain and the cells of your body. As a result, you no longer have full expression of your God-given “Innate intelligence” or “Life Giving Energy.” This decreases your ability to adapt completely to internal and external stresses. In turn, the body functions at less than optimal levels. This is referred to as a state of “dis-ease.”
Salaam Namaste Magazine, January 2009
72
Depending on your body you may experience: Headaches, Allergies, Weak Immunity, Fatigue, Insomnia, Digestive problems, and Hormonal Imbalance, one with other variations or expressions of your Loss of EASE and poor state of Function. The specific chiropractic adjustment process restores movement, reestablishes the free flow of your Life Giving Energy, and your ability to adapt, heal and continue growing physically, emotionally and even spiritually. Health is caused by having normal function and ease inside your body. All the Drugs in the world will not address the subluxated spine nor restore the connection between your Brain and your body. You are amazing, your body is a miracle, let’s look at it that way and ask, “How can I help my body express it’s Maximal State of Health?” The result is an ever-increasing realization of your potential in life! The most important thing to realize here is that chiropractic care is not a “treatment” for symptoms, rather it is about getting back what you have loss: your Function, your connection, your life and health. In this way, chiropractic helps “acorns” become the “oak trees” they were meant to be. How many “acorns” do you have at home waiting to become Oak Trees? Adding Chiropractic to your family’s health care team is a wise investment of time, Chiropractic helps maximize the body and health from the inside out; no drugs, no magic, just results. www.SNMonthly.com

SOUTH ASIAN FACES
Welcome 2009, Destiny or Decisions?
D
o you believe in the Rab ne bana di jodi analogy? Destiny refers to a predetermined course of events. It may be conceived as a predetermined feature, whether in general or of an individual. It is a concept based on the belief that there is a fixed natural order to the universe. Call it destiny or fate, some people refer to this term as something they can’t alter, something that has been decided much ahead of time and that they have to follow on course. My personal opinion: I don’t believe in it. To believe in it will be to renounce the possibility of so many things in my life. What do you think..??? Bhai jee kismet ka likha kaun taal sakta hai… is often heard among South Asian populations, especially when someone is going through a tough time. I would believe in this statement when I have put in 100 percent of my talents, hard work and capability to achieve something and couldn’t. But there are several of us who believe that our lives are predestined and that we should resign ourselves to our lots in life. Yet I am of the firm belief that it is up to each one of us to decide what our destiny will be. While each of us is born with a life purpose, it is up to us whether or not we will say yes to fulfilling it. And just like when we choose what to eat, who to keep company with, and whether to turn right or left when we leave our home everyday, choosing to say yes to your destiny is a decision that can only be realized when you take action to make that choice a reality. A while ago I met with a woman and her nineteen year-old daughter who (for many reasons) had a life which was, at worst, on the brink of disaster, and at best, going nowhere fast. The young woman had significant personal issues (as we all do from time to time) and so the mother made an appointment with a counselor to see if they could possibly come up with some type of strategy to turn things around. The mother shared that the counselor said, don’t turn up if she’s not genuinely ready to do the things necessary to create permanent change. As I sat and spoke with the two of them, it became apparent that they were both of the opinion that she (the daughter) had ended up where she was by some stroke of bad luck, or some kind of cosmic excuse to shift the logic. Apparently the universe was conspiring to make her life a misery. Fate, perhaps. Salaam Namaste Magazine, January 2009 December 2008
Here’s a snapshot of her situation: Wealthy family; Left school at sixteen to ‘work’ in the family business. Hated work and rarely turned up. Always too unwell to work, but well enough to party. Smoked because of peer pressure. Morbidly obese. Parents who ‘love’ her, but facilitated her crap because there had never been any real consequences for her destructive, deceptive, selfish behavior. Mummy and Daddy always bailed her out. (Parents who do this actually perpetuate the problem). The mother informed me that her daughter had always had terrible luck with friends, relationships, school, teachers, and with drugs! How on earth does someone have terrible luck with drugs? She then shared that she didn’t “feel it was her daughter’s destiny to live the life she was living.” I told mum that I didn’t believe in the (mainstream) concept of destiny. I told her that I believe it is the refuge of the lazy. I told her that destiny was a convenience for people who didn’t want to take responsibility for what they make (or don’t make) of their life. And boy do I regret discovering this awesome reality not very early myself! But self talk helps as I was beginning to see through this situation, channel my courage, and evaluate certain events from my past. She gave me the maternal death-stare. “She hates me anyway,” I thought and turned to the daughter:“I believe your life is a disaster largely because of the decisions you have and haven’t made, and the things you have and haven’t done,” I advised. “It’s all about choices. Simple, If you decide to do different, think different, react different, eat different, live different and communicate different.... you’ll be different. Better; Leaner; Lighter; Healthier; Excited; Happy; Fulfilled; Content.” If destiny is some pre-ordained series of events, circumstances, situations and experiences which are bound to ‘happen to us’ over the course of our lifetime, then we don’t actually have to do anything, because whatever will be, will be. It’s all beyond our control anyway. Pathetic. Sometimes we romanticize our existence here on the big green ball with fluffy, vague, feel-good, mumbo-jumbo philosophies. And in doing so we: l Fail to deal with realities of the human 74 74

experience. l Fail to ‘scrape our knees’ and learn. l Fail to feel and experience all life has to offer. l Fail to be responsible for our own journey. l Fail to grow as we could and should. l Fail to live, laugh, love and learn. Well, the good news is the mother described joyfully that after the session with the counselor, we realized it for the very first time and started to consider things from a new perspective and explore other possibilities. As she was now in charge of her future with tears that confessed and tears that celebrated the realization of goals …I could see the moment of mixed feelings!! A year on (and a few chats later), junior is back studying, 66 lbs lighter, still hating me periodically (and occasionally loving me), drug-free and a completely different and happy individual. Because she decided to be. Every day that we chose to do or not something we are creating our destiny, it is a journey not a destination. It evolves, grows, and changes with time. It serves us in the manner that suits us. “We are the masters of our fate, the captains of our souls, because we have the power to control our thoughts,” said Napoleon Hill several years ago. So do we sit back and feel content with the analogy Rab ne bana di Jodi…or agree with the many of us who believe “We create our own Destiny!” Wish you all a fabulous 2009…keep on rocking with your kismet connection!!! www.SNMonthly.com www.SalaamNamasteMag.com

OPINION by Pooja Pittie Goel
Introducing Culture
Children
“
What kind of flower is that? I’ve never seen it before,” asked my three-year-old son as he watched me draw a lotus for one of my book illustrations. “It’s a pink lotus,” I replied. “Gulaabi kamal. It’s the national flower of India.” I proceeded to tell him about pretty pink lotus ponds in India, tasty lotus root pakoras that my aunt cooked for me when I was a child and lotus offerings at temples during Diwali. I constantly look out for opportunities such as this to discuss Indian culture with my son, who is growing up in Chicago — far away from the values and tradition that were part of my own upbringing. While I am glad of the developmental opportunities available to him here in the United States, like most other parents, I also want him to understand his rich Indian heritage. Language
A
n essential element to introduce any culture is language. Research has proved that it is easier for children to learn different languages at a young age. Familiarity with basic sounds and vocabulary of a native language in their early years (ages 1-3) makes it easier for children to learn the language as they start to talk. This early exposure is especially a challenge in the US where English is the language that surrounds children. And with both parents working on fulltime careers and a non-Indian caregiver at preschool, it is very unlikely that kids born here will learn the native language of their parents. In such situations, colorfully illustrated books, charts, and videos can be an asset. For example, when children look at Hindi words in Devanagri script as an adult reads them out loud, it helps them to learn to read and write the language later on. Books and videos are a great way to help children learn words for everyday objects, colors and numbers in a different language. Imagine the look of pride on naani’s face when her “Amreekan” grandson asks her for a “laddoo” instead of candy! Even simple, broken Hindi can help kids bond with their grandparents and cousins when they visit India.

Trips to India
H
ere I wish to stress that in my opinion, there is no substitute for trips to India as a means of providing an enriching cultural experience. Parents should take advantage of every opportunity to travel to India with their children as this early exposure creates unforgettable impressions. My son is 6 years old now and still talks about people he met in India and places he visited two years ago! Music
O
ne of the most entertaining and fun ways to create curiosity about Indian culture in a child is through music. From serene classical raagas to catchy Bollywood songs, music can give them their first exposure to an Indian language. Introducing children to the sights and sounds of India in this manner leads their naturally curious minds to ask questions and these interactions provide the necessary opportunities for parents to pass on knowledge of our culture and heritage to children. Values that are an important part of Indian culture
B
asic values like sharing their lunch with friends seated around them, respecting elders, being kind to animals, non-violence, being humble, etc, need to be ingrained into children as early as possible if they are to be part of their character. Genesis of Little GuruSkool
I
wanted to introduce my son to Indian culture when he was very young and started looking for books and videos to use as educational aids. I was surprised to see that there were not very many products that could be used by parents to introduce Indian language, art and music to children in the 1-5 years age group. During my interactions with other parents, I realized that this problem was quite common. That was when I decided to develop a set of suitable products and thus founded my company
76
Little GuruSkool, where we produce bilingual DVDs and board books featuring Indian scenes, puppets and engaging music to create a fun learning experience for children. Here are my tips on sharing cultural experiences with the little guru in your life: l Plan a trip to India during a festival or a wedding to provide an unforgettable cultural experience l Cook a traditional Indian meal and host a party for your kid’s friends! l Listen to Indian music to expose them to language, sounds, and instruments l Involve them in fun activities during festivals and rituals (e.g. painting clay diyas together on Diwali) l Choose the traditions and festivals that are most important to you and explain their significance to them l Use familiar American examples to help them relate to Indian traditions (e.g. string Christmas lights on Diwali, make kulfi popsicles with condensed milk and cream, create a kathakali mask for their next Halloween costume) l Remember to maintain a balanced appreciation of both Indian and American cultures so that they don’t feel confused or isolated from their friends I would love to hear from parents as I create this cultural “gurukul” for their children. MEN’S fashioN by Ali Fazal
Sexy and Sophisticated: Winter trends spelled out
W
hat’s the word on the street this year for men’s fall/winter accessories? With a sea of shops offering items discounted like crazy, it is hard to buy clothes from different places and still pull a cohesive look together. Salaam Namaste gives you the dish on what’s hot for winter, and attempts to predict which looks will stick in the months to come. Sophistication. Wrapping up a classy ensemble with a strategically chosen accessory can pull a look together that creates a stylish look without being too formal. Even a casual look can be streamlined with a trendy winter accessory (think sweater tied around the neck — yes the Mohabbatein look is back!) When choosing fall/winter accessories, look for a streamlined look with a touch of color. The necktie is making a comeback, but in narrow, subdued colors that accent (rather than dominate) a look, whether it’s a casual evening out or formal business presentation. Scarves are also a big hit in fall/ winter accessories this year, from hand knit creations (indulge your girlfriend or wife–chances are she’s taken up the hot trend of knitting!) to multi-colored designer options. Chunky belts can also bring the right amount of glitz to accent a semi-dressy outfit. Salaam Namaste Magazine, Magazine,January December Salaam Namaste 20092008

Adding a touch of excitement balances the look and provides an element of surprise. However, if you’re not into too much metal, you can limit the look to the belt buckle or stay with a classic narrow belt look. Both add the touch of sophistication. Into reading? Streamlined ‘geek’ glasses are still in, and there’s something women find really attractive about a well-read man. The ‘smart’ look is again, one of sophistication, which is the stylistic theme we should all strive for this season. Even if you have perfect vision, clear streamlines spectacles can offer a chic look for winter. Open shirts are in this season, so accent your chest with a solid necklace that falls between a wimpy chain and the armor of the 1980s. Today’s necklace is bold, combining leather and stones, a perfect combination of elegance and masculinity, taking the cue from rockers of days gone by. Finally, think color. Use accessories to toss in a bit of this season’s hottest colors, such as black, purple, grey, and brown. Save yourself the expense of buying the trendy clothing styles in the brighter colors and use accessories (remember those scarves?) instead. This will keep your look hot and your wallet not. www.SalaamNamasteMag.com Tel: www.SNMonthly.com Tel: 972-401-1550

BOLLYWOOD nightlife

C
osmopolitan India recently held its annual ‘Fun Fearless Female’ Awards for 2008. As the year comes to a close, countless Bollywood starlets showed up, proud to display their fun and fearlessness. The coveted award, cleverly shaped like a stiletto heeled shoe, is given to the women who spoke their mind and made a difference that year. Interestingly, this year awards were given to several men as well, who promoted the image of a ‘strong, sexy woman’ in their own way. Many other Bollywood VIPs were in attendance, including Shahrukh Khan, who also emceed the event.
Clockwise from top left: Shahrukh Khan accepting his award; Koel Purie on the ‘pink’ carpet; Farah Khan, director/ choreographer accepting her award; Bipasha Basu posing with her award; Saniya Mirza, teen tennis sensation, with her award; Sushmita Sen posing as she exits; Milind Soman and Rahul Dev greeting the press; Ronit Roy and Rohit Roy joking around on the ‘pink’ carpet; Ranbir Kapoor exiting with his award.
