A blueprint for integrated assessment of climate change The Tyndall Centre's Integrated Assessment Model (IAM) will bring together climate models, socio-economic models, models of technological change, policy models, transport models and models of social behaviour and decision making. Before building the model, it is vital for decisions to be made regarding the questions the model will answer, the structure it will take and how it will be realised. Dr Rachel Warren, is coordinating a large team of Tyndall Centre research partners from around the UK to establish the structural and implementation framework for the IAM. They are gathering information from discussions with expert integrated assessment modellers and key representatives from industry, government and other organisations, from literature reviews, and visits to centres of excellence. The gathered information will assist decisions about which model components are required from existing modules (including representation of water resources, energy use and forestry) as well as crucial new modules that need to be developed for representation of coastal impacts, transport and the built environment, extreme events, abrupt climate change and other areas in which the Tyndall Centre has expertise. The team's main activity will be to investigate ways these and other modules will link together and interact, how the model will deal with uncertainty, and how it can incorporate feedback from decision makers using the model. The model will be at the core of the Tyndall Centre's research, allowing scientists to conduct a holistic investigation into adaptation and mitigation strategies for climate change.
Computer models that bring together climate science, policy and socio-economic research are essential for analysing the impacts of climate change policies across a broad range of sectors, time scales and areas.
