Dr Afzaal Malik has been appointed as Head iof Department of Mechanical Engineering. Dr Afzaal Malik has been lecturing here since 1996. To his credit he has one hundred and twenty five research papers. He did his MS and PhD in Nuclear Engineering from School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology USA.

Editor of Campbuzz Weds Maj Attique Nawaz, SO to Comdt is finally tied into a marriage. His marriage took place on 22 October in Rawalpindi and Walima on 23 October in his home town Kamra. All of us join hands to this gesture of good luck to him and warmest wishes for a happy after life. ‘afterlife’.

A good forty students took part in this competition held in ASG lecture hall on 6th June. The articles have been evaluation and the announced prizes are precious. APSACS SECTT TEAM VISIETD APS EME COLLEGE CAMPUS APSACS sect evaluation team comprising Mrs. Mahjabeen amin, Dee director training & evaluation Mrs. Salman, Mrs. Noreen and Mrs. Naqvi evaluated APS EME College on 15th Oct 2008. The members of the team headed by Mrs. Mahjabeen amin checked professional documents maintained by the principal, section heads and the teachers. The team members observed the teachers in classes, general discipline and overall working of the school. Then they held a post visit conference with faculty members after pack up

timings and shared various professional points with them. Later on they held orientation meeting with representatives from the parents. The team members also had a nice discussion & exchange of views about the school matters with directors APS affairs Col Muhammad Khalid Sharif being the member of the garrison working body (GWB) and with the Principal Col (R) Sabir Hussain shah. The evaluation team spent full day from 0730 to 1830 hrs in the evening and left the school at 1900 hrs in the evening.

The match was played on Thursday 13th Nov at EME college stadium at 1400 hrs , and it attracted support of many supporters from both sides. The match was played in a very friendly manner and finally the hosts won the match by 4-3.

Pc Arslan Amer Qazi is 2nd emenent at home. He is in DE-30 doing Electrical Engineering. Earlier from the same department his father now Col Amer Qazi did engineering as part of DE-6. Presently Col Amer Qazi is doing as Dy Comdt 501 Base Workshop .

Another day in College Written by Harris Janjua When you wake up in the morning, is there anything you want more than just to sleep five more minutes? Same was the case with me when I woke up at 7:15 in the morning. I was up late the last night because of a major project and covering some assignments. I kept putting my alarm on snooze again and again till the very last minute I could afford to be in bed. At 7:50 I finally got up and dashed out to get ready. As always I was getting late for my first lecture. Walking on the ring road, half running, I heard a voice “Saaa…b!” … “Ruuk jain saab!” A staff appeared out of nowhere and was on to me with a huge greedy grin on his face. He scanned me and found quite a lot to fine me for. After a few minutes of unsuccessful pleading and getting fined 500 over the haircut I was running towards the class in an even worse mood. I raced again towards my block and just as I reached the door of my class I saw the lecturer who was about to enter the class. I slowed down for him to enter first. But when I entered the room he turned around and asked “yes? Why are you late?” And I just stood there with a startled face, trying to catch my breath and calculating the number of classes I could afford to miss. All this created such a depressed forlorn look on my face that he had to let me in. Phew…. Now it was hard to keep awake in the first lecture of the day, but I somehow managed. After that I decided to go to the library to lookup some stuff. As I entered the library and turned left, quite a lot of pairs of heads raised and looked at me with a curious expression and there expressions asking me a simple question “what are you doing here alone?” I asked myself the same thing and turned right towards the computer section of the library. Wishing to use the internet I tried to find a computer that worked. Each one had some problem and I had to suppress the urge to combine different components from different computers in an attempt to make a fully working PC. But found out that the net server was down and found that I had no internet access. Then I decided to give up and go to have something to eat at the famous not hot spt. Getting my things from the crowded shop as I reached the lawn yet again a staff appeared and shouted “Saaab! Ye families ki jagah hay!” and I was left in a half standing half sitting position with a cup in one hand and a plate in the other, appreciating the humor of what the staff just said but too caught up in my own predicament to enjoy it much. Then I accompanied the staff to the approved spot for boys and ate my breakfast in a congested noisy space looking at the empty lawn that I could’ve enjoyed instead. Wondering how does the staff do that, you look here you there and just as you are about to do something forbidden they always appear in the same manner with a Punjabi movie style voice and Mustafa qureshi style grin clearly saying phhass giya ain bachaya!. Finally I got free from the college and returned to my hostel aiming to study with some out living class fellows. Just when we have started off a bearer comes in and tells us that out livings are not allowed in the hostel! And so went on another simple happy day in our college. We are the educational elite in Pakistan claiming to be in league with LUMS and GIKI. No UPS, no generator, no solid net availability, and oh yeah! We still have problems with our bathrooms. It’s beginning to look like that all we’ve got are rules or broken out of order facilities.

Fahrenheit 451 Written by M Usman Farooq 27EE

It was a pleasure to burn. So begins the perfect dark master piece dealing with human freedom and censorship written by Ray Bradbury. The name Fahrenheit 451 represents the temperature at which book paper burns. The book depicts a future where television dominates the culture and books are banned and burnt. Rigid conformity is expected from everyone and independent thought is banished. It portrays that if pointless television, unbound commercialism and meaningless trivia is allowed to overwhelm reading and thoughtful debate, it would lead to a society which might be stable but so mindless and stagnant that it would not be worth living in. The story revolves around a person whose profession is to hunt down books and anything related to literature and burn them down to ashes. But things begin to change once he starts to taste the forbidden fruit of knowledge. This book is not just about censorship, it also deals with the inherent tension existing between knowledge and ignorance in advanced societies and intellectual freedom in an environment of oppressive indoctrination. As compared with dystopian heavy weights like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four, this book is quite short and easy to read. Yet it loses none of its potency and flavor. The use of the mythic ideas of fire salamanders and the phoenix make the book more poetic than any other dystopian work. And unlike many futuristic works it gives a unique literary pleasure. We have started our descent into a media driven society where moral education, reading, and reason are being made extinct or downright subversive. And the unsettling insights of this book are more relevant today than sixty years ago when it was originally written.

Its worth mentioning here that modeling and simulation of Dynamic systems using bond graph method is a unique course being offered only at EME College and conducted by Dr Afzaal Malik for the last 13 years. There is no other university/institution offering any thing like that. Dr Afzaal Malik is known for his research across the globe and to his credit he has as many as one hundred and twenty five research papers. At the moment fours scholars are doing their PhD under his supervision. Two out of them are getting almost over with it. At overage, six student complete their Masters every year under his supervision/guidance. In recognition of his research work, the Pakistan Academy of sciences awarded Dr Afzaal Malik a Gold Medal and gave an award for the best research in Pakistan in the category of engineering and technology for the year 2001. Dr Afzaal Malik was handed over the award by Dr Atta Ur Rehman in 2002. South Asia publications awarded him the “ 2001 Star Laureate” award for best research in the category of engineering in 2007 for Pakistan in a competition on all Pakistan basis, It was decided by a panel comprising judges who were the three vice chancellors of the universities. One of his research papers related to tribology was declared the top most paper in USA after peer review of research papers from all over the world. Dr Afzaal Malik has got a deep interest in structural analysis and problems related to them. He has contributed in enhancing the efficiency of Al Khalid Tank being manufactured at HIT by initiating research related to auto frettege, the engineering used to strengthen pressure vessels including gun barrels. Dr Afzaal Malik has a wealth of experience and to keep himself abreast with the latest development he very regularly attends the International Conferences/Seminars by ASME, JSME, CNS. Dr Afzaal Malik is convinced Pakistan has got a matchless name “ The land of pure” our capital is Islamabad meaning “ the city of peace “ and we should be good citizens with our focus on education and it must be research based education. Talent and hard work are the only two attributes required for the quality education and we as a nation have a lot potential and this would improve the ranking of our universities a great deal. NS Malik Basharat the editor feels proud to have interviewed such a learned, highly qualified, experienced, an engineer and a scientist and above all the personality who is held in the highest of the esteems. In fact Dr Afzaal Malik is the real asset of the department of Mechanical Engineer in particular and NUST in general. The meeting formally began with Commandant’s address in which he laid emphasis on responsibilities of students and importance of setting goals and objectives in life. He highlighted that it is the responsibility of those 30%of Pakistan’s youth, who are fortunate enough to get education, to transfer education to those 70 % who are unable to have this privilege. It was a 2 week tour which started on 24th of July. The first university visited was University of Surrey, which is located in Guildford, Surrey in the South East of England. Students visited different departments and were shown high-tech laboratories and their stateof-the-art equipment. They were also told about the research carried out in different departments. One of these departments is the conducts extensive research on small satellites and has a high number of staff. Postgraduate programs and admission procedures were explained to prospective students. This university announced that it would exempt the students of NUST from the IELTS test due to the high ranking and reputation of NUST. NUST has already signed an MOU with University of Surrey. The next destination was the University of Southampton, which is located on the south coast of England. This university is a member of the elite “Russell Group”, an Association of leading UK research -intensive Universities. Students got a chance to see different research facilities and laboratories. The students also visited an under -construction clean room complex, which when completed will be one of the most exciting interdisciplinary scientific research facilities in the country. The trip also included a visit to the University of Leeds. This university too is member of the Russell Group. The university provided excellent accommodation and catering services to the visiting delegation. Students of Electrical and Computer Engineering were taken to the School of Computing, whereas the students of Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering visited the School of Process Environmental and Material Engineering (SPEME). Here the students got a chance to see different state-of-the-art Electron Microscopes. Students also visited the School of Mechanical Engineering (SME). The last destination of the trip was the University of Glasgow, situated in the beautiful, historic and exciting city of Glasgow in Scotland. This university is ranked amongst the top 100 universities of the world and has a history of more than 500 years. The best part of the stay in Glasgow was the visit to the City Chambers where a dinner was hosted in the honor of the Pakistani delegation by Mr. Hamza Malik, a Pakistani-born Councilor of Glasgow. The trip concluded on 8th of August when a few students returned to Pakistan but several extended their stay in the UK. The trip was an admirable step taken by the NUST, because it was a chance for the students to get exposure to foreign universities and to see their standard of research with which they have to compete in order to strive in their field. Visits arranged to these universities at the undergrad level help in enhancing the reputation of NUST. Rector NUST Inaugurates NUST Gate

Maj Gen Muhammad Shahid visits APS EME College Campus

Lt Gen Muhamamd Asghar , Rector NUST paid a visit to College of EME on 24th Oct 2008.. On his arrival at 1030hrs , he inaugurated NUST Gate also known as ASG gate. He also addressed the college faculty in ASG Lecture Hall followed by a cup of tea with the faculty. He departed from the college at 1230 hrs.

The new Commandant and the Patron-In-Chief of APS Maj Gen Muhammad Shahid visited the school on 8th October. The Comdt showed keen interest in the affairs of the school. He talked to the faculty on various matters and resolved their professional and administrative matters then and their. He verbally approved the up gradation of the school to SSC level from the next academic session 2009-10. The Gen also approved purchase of 1x Suzuki Van for the convince of faculty and the students.

Robotics For Dummies  Course-ware for beginners We believe that robotics can be learnt by everyone!  The course comprises tutorials on different important concepts involved in robotics with regards to the NERC competition. The controller emphasized in the course is 8051; the programming language followed is C. It is assumed that the readers have at least studied the basic electric circuits and basic programming courses. A tutorial for lab report writing is also included with the package. Super Sixes Cricket Tournament Ends Super sixes cricket tournament organized by SAS attracted 16 teams and kept them busy for a week. The final was played on 6th Nov 2008. the finalists “Laado 29” remained unbeaten throughout and won the tournament. “Jeega Jeega” was other team to play the final but lost. The winning team has been promised Rs 3000 as a cash prize by the SAS. The tournament was very well organized and everybody playing and watching enjoyed. We could have easily seen the sportsman spirit being exhibited by the players and almost all the games. Winning or loosing does not matter at all. They people who matter in SAS deserve our applause in conducting such a nice tournament but at the very same time they themselves should also exhibit sportsman spirit and except the defeat gracefully. In sheer disappointment they were seen throwing the bat in the air while walking back to the pavilion. It is expected that in the days to come and the events to follow it would be all gentlemanliness being displayed. Degree-27 Electrical Meets the Commandant

(Aneeqa Ishaq 27 EE) Our new commandant Major Gen. Muhammad Shahid is very keen to have interaction with students. For this purpose meeting of each degree with the commandant has been planned and notices have been issued to all the departments well in time. The first meeting of this series was arranged with Degree-27 Electrical on Friday, 31st October. When Students of Degree-27 Electrical came to know about this meeting, they decided to make full use of it by discussing their immediate problems with the commandant. For this purpose, a class discussion was organized in the free hours on Thursday, the Miss Aneeqa Ishaq and Mr. Faizan Razzaq were our scribes who prepared minutes of the discussion. On Friday31st October, Degree-27 Electrical assembled in ASG lecture hall to meet Commandant and discuss their problems with him.

UK Summer Trip (Muhammad Usama Shabir 27EE) In the summer vacations of 2008, NUST arranged an orientation tour for a select group of students to visit some of the prestigious universities of the United Kingdom. The purpose of the tour was to collaborate with these universities, and to promote the name of NUST outside Pakistan. The visit was for the students of College of EME and SEECS (formally NIIT), selected on the basis of their GPA. The trip was coordinated by Brig. Abdul Ghafoor (Dean, EME College) with Campus Consultancy Services Ltd. UK. Top students from each department were chosen and led by Mr. Taosif Iqbal (Lecturer, EE Department). Dr Afzaal Malik Dr Afzaal Malik is the senior most professor of the department of mechanical engineering. His dedicated and devoted association with the dept is spread over thirteen years. The editor campbuzz NS Malik Basharat interviewed the learned figure in which he responded as follows:Dr Afzaal Malik joined EME College on 1 Sep 1996 as Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering Dept. In 2002 he was elevated as Professor. Before joining EME College he did worked as principal engineer in the modeling and simulation division at KRL from 1988 to 1996 and played a vital role in securing his homeland. When he got over his PhD in 1988 Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan asked Dr Afzaal Malik to join KRL and Dr Afzaal Malik imbued with the supreme spirit of patriotism joined KRL ignoring the millions of dollars he could have earned in the states. Dr Afzaal Malik did his BSc from Gorden College Rawalpindi and then joined Government College Lahore and pursued MSc in Nuclear Physics. Then he proceeded to Georgia Tech University USA and did MS in Nuclear Engineering in 1983 which was followed by PhD in Nuclear Engineering in 1988. He specialized in Nuclear Engineering and his sub specialization is in modeling and simulation. Over the years he has been teaching several courses at UG level and now he teaches at post graduates level. He is lecturing four subjects. (1). Finite element methods. (2). Computational Fluid Dynamic (3). Control Systems. (4). Modeling and simulation of Dynamic system using bond graph method. Continued on Page 5
