Nurturing Character Empowering Minds

Papercut Issue1 P2

How can we summarise the past nine months of life in Bukit View? At the outset, we had our annual Speech and Prize Giving Day celebration in April. This was to honour the successes of Bukit Viewans – students, staff and partners alike. For our Performing Arts groups, this was also a challenging period as they stepped up training and rehearsals to prepare themselves for the Singapore Youth Festival competitions. Their hardwork did pay off! In June, the H1N1 flu pandemic, shook Singapore and tested our unity, strength and capabilities as a nation. Daily routines that we took for granted came to a standstill. Bukit View rose to the occasion to ensure procedures were in place. Temperature checks in school became the order of the day. Students who had to stay away from school because of illness, did not lose out – they could go online to complete assignments ‘posted’ on the school’s website by their teachers. Despite the H1N1 pandemic, the school carried on the Youth Day celebration in July and the National Day celebration in August. Since mass gatherings were not encouraged, both celebrations took place mainly in class – but the jubilant mood was never dampened. This was followed by the celebration of Teachers’ Day in September, and by this time, everyone was gathered in the hall. What a finale for the end of Term 3!

Thus, in this first of two issues of our 2009 newsletter, we take stock of the past nine months. We will take you through the highlights of the various events – events that have empowered and nurtured us to be what we are today. Sadly, we also bid farewell to our Vice-Principal, Mr Loh Chu Yin, who has finally retired from the service. We will surely miss that stern, yet fatherly figure vigilantly watching over us along the corridor. Our best wishes to Mr Loh!

SPEECH&PRIZE-GIVING DAY

It

17 April, Friday

was the most important event of the school - a day to celebrate the successes and achievements of Bukit View as an institution of learning.

Our distinguished guests included School Advisory Committee members, our partners from various organisations and parents.

The school began preparations for this day as early as January. Both the uniformed groups and the Performing Arts groups were mobilized to put up a parade and a concert respectively. It was an honour for these students to be part of such a grand and meaningful event.

The Guest-of-Honour was Mr. Tan Wee Hock, the Divisional Director of National Environment Agency - one of our school’s active partners. He inspected the uniformed groups and officially opened our Students’ Gallery before proceeding to the hall for the Prize Presentation ceremony and a concert.

again, with the announcement of the GCE ‘O’ Level and ‘N’ Level results, Bukit View had its crop of top students. Their diligence and perseverance had certainly paid off. Due recognition was also given to other Bukit Viewans from the other levels who had done well academically. These top students will certainly be an inspiration to others. We are certainly very proud of our school.

Well done, Bukit View!

line with the philosophy of ‘ ‘Teach Less, Learn More’, many lessons were learnt ‘outside the classroom’, and in the true spirit of innovation and learning journeys, even if it meant taking part in the Maths Olympiad or going to the supermarket, our students certainly learnt much more than just the usual lessons in the confines of a classroom!

Cafe Enterprise Café Enterprise is an initiative by the I&E Committee together with EBS, POA and F&N teachers for students to experience working in a real F&B workplace. Students went through a training course by the Café Staff and carried out duties like serving waffles, snacks and drinks to fellow students at the Café. The students also learnt the importance of book-keeping by ensuring the balances of cash at the end of their shift. Eight shortlisted 3T1 students were selected to work in the Singapore F1 GP 2009 with Ritz Carlton, The Millenia. They worked for the duration of 3 full days as Food & Beverage staff, as well as at the Paddock F1 area. In addition, they came across the likes of Alonso and Hamilton during the course of their duties. It was an enriching and rewarding experience. Each participant will be given a Certificate of Participation for their services.

months from January to March saw our Performing Arts groups in full swing, as they rehearsed for the Singapore Youth Festival competitions. Their hard work paid off as can be seen from their awards of BRONZE, SILVER and GOLD! More importantly, it was the journey of self-discovery, perseverance, teamwork and friendship that matters most than any awards received. Well done all dancers, singers, band members and actors! so the saying goes. It is through various programmes and events that many students ‘discover’ themselves – that they can lead and make decisions on their own. Empowerment is not just a word in Bukit View, it is a reality, and more so for our Student Leaders and Councillors as well as the student facilitators of various programmes.

And yes, we did not just learn about teamwork or perseverance. We learnt about the different kinds of plants and their functions, the water transport system and certain skills that just cannot be learnt from a whiteboard.
