LAB Isolation of Lactobacillus acidophillus from Cultured Milk Objectives 1. To observe the growth of Lactobacillus acidophillus. 2. To study the benefit of Lactobacillus in human body. 3. To study the morphology of Lactobacillus. Introduction Every bottle of Vitagen is packed with billions of the world-famous live good bacteria, Lactobacillus. Vitagen is produced by cultivating these live good bacteria in wholesome milk and added with real fruit juice. All this goodness aid digestion, thus keeping digestive system in balance and healthy for healthy body. Materials and Method • Microorganism Bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophillus from cultured milk, Vitagen was used in this experiment. • Preparation of nutrient broth agar (NA) 23g nutrient agar (NA) was diluted into 1L of distilled water. Agar was sterilized by autoclaving at 121°C, 15psi, for 20 minutes. After autoclaved and cooled at room temperature, agar was pour into the petri dish.

Isolate of Lactobacillus acidophillus One drop of Vitagen was transferred on the surface of NA. The Vitagen was spread using hockey stick. Then, a plate was incubated at 30°C for 24 hours. Result

Lactobacillus acidophillus grown in NA after 24 hours incubation

Discussion 1. Discussed in detailed the benefit of Lactobacillus in human body. Lactobacillus is one of probiotics - live microbial feed supplement which beneficially affects the host animal by improving its intestinal microbial balance. Benefit of Lactobacillus includes: • • • • • • • • • •

Increased resistance to infectious diseases, particularly of the intestine. Decreased duration of infectious diarrhoea and possibly benefit in preventing travellers' diarrhoea. Beneficial effect on irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and bowel cancer. Reduction in blood pressure. Reduction in serum cholesterol concentration. Reduction in allergy in infants but not in older children. Stimulation of phagocytosis by peripheral blood leucocytes. Modulation of cytokine gene expression. Regression of tumours. Reduction in carcinogen or co-carcinogen production.

Conclusion Through this experiment, I am understood and appreciate the growth aspect, morphology, and the benefit of Lactobacillus acidophillus in human body. References http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/40001695/#ref3 (130908)
