IP Ratings The IP rating of an electrical appliance is identified by a code that consists of the letters "IP" followed by two digits: 1. The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against solid objects. 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Not protected Protected against solid objects greater than 2” (50 mm) (ex. any large surface of the body, such as the back of a hand) Protected against solid objects greater than 0.5” (12 mm) (ex. fingers) Protected against solid objects greater than 0.1” (2.5 mm) (ex. tools, thick wires, etc.) Protected against objects greater than 0.04” (1 mm) (ex. most wires, screws, etc.) Dust protected (ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment) Dust tight

Protected against vertically dripping water when the enclosure is tilted at an angle up to 15° from its normal position.

Protected against water jets projected by a nozzle against enclosure from any direction. Protected against heavy seas or water projected in powerful jets against the enclosure from any direction.
