About the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry The Department of Chemistry was started in 1908. Professor F L Usher was appointed as the first professor of the department in 1910. He was a student of Sir William Ramsay, Nobel Laureate of Chemistry - 1904. The department was affiliated to the University of Madras until 1916. It attained the status of a university department after the establishment of the University of Mysore and subsequently it came under the administrative control of Bangalore University in 1964. The development of the department both in teaching and research, during the last century is due to the untiring efforts of a galaxy of teachers. The current teaching programs of the chemistry department include M.Sc. in Chemistry with analytical, inorganic, organic and physical specializations. It also offers engineering chemistry for the students of University Visvesvarayya College of Engineering. The Department of Biochemistry offers M.Sc. in Biochemistry. Both the chemistry and biochemistry departments offer M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. The curricula for the all courses are regularly updated to reflect changing trends worldwide. The students acquire the necessary skills for teaching, research and to work in chemical industries. The department has a vibrant Chemical Society which organizes lectures by experts in different areas of chemistry and biochemistry. The Chemical Society also arranges annual lecture contests as well as industrial visits for the benefit of students. The department has successfully completed the UGS-DRS and DST-FIST programmes, and now applied for the next phases respectively. The faculty members are actively involved in research with individual projects from various funding agencies.
About Bangalore The capital of the southern state of Karnataka in India, in 2008, the erstwhile Bangalore has been renamed as Bengaluru, honoring the name given by the founder architect of this city Magadi KempeGowda, 500 years ago. Bengaluru is Asia’s fastest growing cosmopolitan city. Bengaluru is the IT capital of India. It is home to India’s premier scientific establishments like IISc, JNCASR, RRI, CIMAP, NAL, ISRO, ADA, GKVKUAS and NCBS among others. It is called as the Garden City of India, due to its gardens, parks, natural lakes. The Bangalore Palace was built by Rev. Garrett, the first principal of Central High School, now known as Central College in 1862. The palace is a smaller replica of the Windsor Castle, England. Bengaluru also houses the Vidhana Soudha, the seat of state legislature of Karnataka. Built in the 1950s’, the building incorporates elements of Indo-Saracenic, Rajasthani, Jharoka and Dravidian styles. It is the largest legislative building in India.
Weather and connectivity Situated at a height of 949 metres (3113 feet) above the sea level, the city is blessed with salubrious climate throughout the year. The temperature in November – December is a pleasant 20oC, with warm sunshine. Bengaluru has an international airport at Devanahalli, which is 40 km from Vidhana Soudha, the centre of the city. It is well connected to all the major cities of India including New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Trivandrum by air. It has excellent train and bus services to all the other major cities of southern India. 3
Invitation The Organizing committee cordially invites you to attend the International Conference on “Current Trends in Chemistry and Biochemistry” to be held at Department of Chemistry, Bangalore University, Bangalore, India, between 12 - 14 November 2009. The event is to commemorate the Centenary Year of the founding of the chemistry department at Central College Campus. The one page abstract should be created using MS word, Times New Roman 10 pt, normal font, single space. Margins: Top/Bottom: 1 inch, Left/Right: 1.25 inches.
