INTRODUCTION TO THE TASK

Europe first started discovering and exploring new lands. The Malay Peninsula was first occupied by foreign powers when the Portuguese defeated the Melaka Kingdom in 1511. Secondly, During the 15th and 16th century , Portugal and Spain were the most influential Western powers aggressively explanding their territorial influential. The exploration of Asia by the Europeans began when Bartholomew Diaz successfully arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in the Africian continent in 1488. Afterthat, Portugal the opportunity to reinfore their standing in India by establishing commercialce centres in Cochin and eventually, taking over Goa in 1510. From 1511, until the time when Malaya achieved its independece on 31 August 1957, history records showed that the country was for 446 years. Finally, Portuguese (1511-1641), followed by the Dutch (1641-1824), and finally the British (1824-1957). Malaya was also briefly occupied by Japanese during the Second World War (1941-1945). The northern states of Malaya were also once protectorates of the Siamese Kingdom.

1.2.1 PORTUGUESE OCCUPATION 1) The Portuguese conquered Kota Melaka in year 1511, but only the city and the port fell. 2) Portuguese occupied Mallacca for 130 years, from 1511 to 1641
