performance notes
{A % B} denotes that the player should vary the
dynamic at which he or she plays a pitch randomly by smoothly transitioning between the two dynamic values represented here by A and B. The solo clarinetist should perform those notes marked with a tremolo symbol with randomly improvised rhythms. The soloist is encouraged to react in his or her improvisation to the actions of the surrounding orchestra. In the solo clarinet part, when a group of pitches is included within a set of parentheses with a tremolo mark above, the soloists is to alternate randomly between the indicated pitches. Unless otherwise noted, all string should be played sempre divisi. The string section should take great care in assigning the division of each chord’s pitches. Very rarely have specific instructions for divisi passages been included. It is, therefore, expected that the performing ensemble make its own decisions as for the division of these parts so as to obtain favorable balance.
program note
The piece serves as the introduction to an imaginary mass of sorts. The beginning represents a processional, ethereal and clearing the listeners mind, which builds to a climax before dying and immediately moving to the opening hymn.
The solo clarinetist, that is the priest, leads the ensemble through the hymn, where, as in many cathedrals, the congregation messes the tune up. The chorus, that is the strings, however, attempt to bring the ensemble back to the hymn and together, their voices meld into the sound of the organ. The conflict inherent in this interplay is suddenly stopped, when the soloist declares a new beginning, a new tonality, and a decidedly major one. The ensemble then briefly reminisces in the chord that opened the piece before coming to a massive cadence.
