Introduction to O Level Chemistry (5070) Past Papers and Answer Guides

Introduction The purpose of this CD-ROM is to provide students and teachers of General Certificate of Education O Level Chemistry (5070) with past examination papers and detailed answer guides. For the student the CD-ROM offers the opportunity to become thoroughly familiarised with the format and style of the examination, and to gain plenty of examination practice. The inclusion of answers makes the CD-ROM ideal for self-study use. For the teacher the CD-ROM is also a valuable resource. In particular, the detailed answer guides, which are based on the original mark scheme developed for the marking of the examination, are an especially useful feature. The mark schemes for each paper have been edited by the Principal Examiner to produce an answer guide that is relevant to teachers’ needs by providing information on the level of detail required in an answer. Where relevant, partial and incorrect answers are also supplied for guidance. Each answer guide section is preceded by an introduction to the use of the guide and includes an explanation of any technical terms and abbreviation used. Syllabuses for the O Level qualifications are relatively stable, but content is revised and updated from time to time. It should be borne in mind, therefore, that the content of past examination papers may not reflect completely the content of the current syllabus. For this reason, teachers and students need to use the anthology alongside the current syllabus document, which can be found on the CIE website. The O Level in Chemistry consists of four papers: Paper number

The theory paper (Paper 2) contains two sections. Section A is assigned 45 marks and consists of a number of compulsory structured questions of variable mark value. Section B carries 30 marks and consists of four questions each of 10 marks. Candidates are required to answer three questions from this section. Paper 3, the Practical Test, is marked out of 40 then scaled to a mark out of 30. All questions must be answered. Candidates are not allowed to refer to notebooks, textbooks or any other information in the practical examination. The Alternative to Practical (Paper 4) is a written paper comprised of compulsory short-answer and structured questions, which are designed to test familiarity with laboratory practical procedures. All questions must be answered.
