“WORKPLACE VIOLENCE AND CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS” Expert Panel Pamela Paziotopoulos - Senior Advisor, Intimate Partner Violence and Stalking Prevention, Center for Personal Protection and Safety Ms. Paziotopoulos began her career in 1990 as a prosecutor for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, quickly focusing on the area of domestic violence. She oversaw curricula development and education in domestic violence prosecution, provided technical assistance to prosecutors and allied professionals, and developed training materials in the areas of domestic violence and stalking. In 1997, she was recruited to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office to create and supervise the Domestic Violence Division. She monitored the prosecution of over 100,000 domestic violence cases emanating each year from the city of Chicago and surrounding area. In 2002, Ms. Paziotopoulos formed her own consulting group, serving both the public and private sectors. Ms. Paziotopoulos has developed and presented numerous training sessions on the topic of domestic violence, stalking and workplace violence to corporations, security directors, human resource professionals, doctors, nurses, employee assistance providers, prosecutors, advocates, judges, law enforcement agencies, psychologists, shelter personnel and court watchers. She has trained the Albanian National Police on domestic violence policy and procedures in Tirana, Albania. Ms. Paziotopoulos has frequently been a keynote speaker on domestic violence. She has also appeared on CNN, CNBC, and the Oprah Winfrey Show as well as numerous national radio and news stations. She has appeared on the FBI’s Training Network discussing domestic violence in the workplace. She was a consultant and participant in the FBI’s Violence in the Workplace Symposium. She has authored numerous articles on the issues of domestic violence and stalking. Her article, “Violence Against Women Act: Federal Relief for State Prosecutors,” has been cited by Federal Courts of Appeal as decisive in defending the landmark legislation VAWA. Ms. Paziotopoulos has a Juris Doctorate degree from the IIT Chicago Kent College of Law as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana, IL. She is also a Certified Instructor for the International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program. Marcel Reid - Chief of Staff, Illinois State Police - Bureau of Identification Mr. Reid is the Executive Officer of the Illinois State Police, Bureau of Identification. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Eastern Illinois University and later attended Sangomon State University’s Public Administration Masters Degree program in Springfield, Illinois. Mr. Reid began his career with the Illinois State Police as a Crime Studies Field Analyst and later worked as a Police Consultant before being assigned to the Bureau of Identification. Mr. Reid is the administrator of the bureau’s Criminal History Record Information (CHRI) program. Among his many duties, Mr. Reid is responsible for developing policies and procedures governing the collection, maintenance and dissemination of Illinois criminal history record information. In addition, Mr. Reid works closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding non-criminal justice access to national criminal history record information. Steve Romano, Senior Advisor, Crisis Management and Negotiations, Center for Personal Protection and Safety Mr. Romano spent the last 20 years of his law enforcement career at the FBI, where he was most recently Chief of the Crisis Negotiation Unit in the Critical Incident Response Group. In this role he led more than 400 trained crisis negotiators in 56 field offices and was responsible for the overall operational, instructional, research, budget, and personnel oversight. During his career with the FBI, Mr. Romano was an active negotiator operationally involved in either a key leadership or advisory role in numerous hostage, barricade and kidnap incidents. He also managed numerous international kidnap negotiations and was deployed to India and Ecuador. While at the FBI, Mr. Romano sharpened his training skills by planning, evaluating, and participating in a wide range of national and international crisis management field training exercises. In addition, he revised the FBI National Crisis Negotiation Course and published a number of crisis negotiation articles. He has been featured in several productions on negotiations for Discovery, TLC, and the History Channel. Dan Shoemaker - USIS, Business Unit Director In this position, Mr. Shoemaker manages the operations of one of USIS’ investigative business units which includes over 475 field investigators, team leaders and district managers. USIS’s Investigative Services Division provides background investigative services to the federal, state, and local governments and commercial customers. USIS is the largest supplier of background investigations to the U.S. Government and a leading provider of these services to private industry. Mr. Shoemaker holds a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and an MBA from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University.
