Art + Science = Culture Music, media, art, and science; these are the things that influence our lives, and these are the things that determine how we view our culture in Ontario. Yet, listening to our favourite songs on our MP3 player, we don’t even give a second thought as to the intense engineering that went into its production. Conversely, a researcher may be studying the crystal formation of a purified protein, only to have the digital image featured as the front cover artwork of a book or magazine. Sound waves are in our musical instruments; the latest video games include an enormous amount of physics to simulate real life. Digital Media is a prime example of technology and science merging with artistic design. In exchange for paint pallets and brushes, new technology and software have become the tools of digital artists. Many businesses in media, software programming, and communications truly take advantage of technological advances occurring every day. So now the question we ask ourselves is, “Can we really decide where the line lies between science and art?” Our Innovation Café will be focusing on individuals that excel in these fields, combining both art and science, affecting the way our culture lives and works. We will have Steven Brown, Assistant Professor at McMaster University in the department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour, and Denis Dyack, President of Silicon Knights.

Questions for discussion include: • What are some examples of influences for these artists and their work? • How challenging is it to keep up with continuous advancements in science and technology to deal with your business and artistic goals? • What does the art world think about all the new technologies in digital design? • How do artists use this technology to present their ideas?
