Individual in Conflict: Week of Nov. 23 – Dec. 4
Mr. Easton
“The first rays of the sun found their way through the thinning clouds, shone out against the sky and ran across the ground and sky together. Mist rolled down the valleys in waves, the dew glittered as it toyed with the greenery, and limpid whitening cloudlets sped across the azure firmament. Birds stirred in the thickets, twittering their happy song for all they were worth. On high, the succulent leaves whispered in peace and joy, and the boughs of the living trees slowly stirred themselves, looking down in majesty on the dead tree that lay flat out on the ground.” -- from Leo Tolstoy’s “Three Deaths” Topic
Assignment
Monday
Today 4th period will watch most of The Final Cut (as 2nd period did on our early dismissal on Friday)
If you haven’t finished reading Tolstoy’s Death of Ivan Ilyich, do that.
Tuesday
Finish the film The Final Cut. We will then discuss whether or not Ivan’s life is worth memorializing via a Eyetech rememory. What would Tolstoy say about Ivan’s life? What should we, as readers, think about Ivan’s life, and whether or not he redeems himself in his death?
Tonight, in lieu of a worksheet on chapters 11 and 12, I want you to write a short response to the following question, using at least two quotes from the novella: Does Tolstoy think that Ivan’s life is worth memorializing? Typed. Due Wednesday?
Wednesday
2nd period will review the next unit in our Vocabulary Vitamins (because we are in the lab on Friday.) 4th period is meeting in lab 224 to finish worksheets on Death of Ivan Ilyich.
Any missing worksheets on The Death of Ivan Ilyich are due this Thursday. Period.
