JBIC ranked India as the fifth most attractive investment destinations. Conde Nast Traveler, one of the world’s most celebrated travel magazines ranked India amongst the top tourist destinations of the world. Tourism is one of the third largest net earner of foreign exchange for the country and also one of the sectors, which employs the largest number of manpower. India has significant potential for becoming a major global tourist destination.

According to World Tourism Organization estimates, India will lead in South Asia with 8.9 million arrivals by 2020 India is poised to emerge as the 2nd fastest growing (8.8%) tourism economy in the world over 2005-14 according to the World Travel & Tourism

Air travel and India Indian air travel to grow 20% each year for the next 5 years Government and private operators will invest $20 billion in aircraft and infrastructure over the next five years Air India will be adding 68 aircraft to its present fleet, Indian Airlines 43 and private airlines around 275 By 2010, Indian airports will be handling between 90 and 100 million passengers (59 million domestic & 35 million international passengers)

Medical tourism in India 





Medical care in the USA and private health care in UK is very expensive. India has well-trained doctors who will work for a lower fee than they could expect abroad. Medical tourism offers people the option of knee replacements, hip replacements, heart care, cosmetic & dental surgery in India. Hundreds of people have treatment abroad, saving them a great deal of money in treatment costs.

Confederation of Indian Industry (C II) sponsored Mc Kinsey & Co. study.–“Healthcare in India : The Road Ahead” report: 1.3 million medical tourists visit Asia / year

 Nos. of US patients seeking cheaper care abroad - grew to 7,10,000 / year  Over 1, 50000 medical tourists travelled to India in 2002 bringing in earnings of $ 300 million. 11  2007-08 > 3,00000

Economic Crisis, Credit Crisis & Recession Will it affect Medical Tourism market in India? There are almost 50 million Americans with no health insurance  Canada - > 700000 patients waiting for procedures/surgery for > 6 months- 1yr  It can have a very positive impact on tourism industry in India for hospital & allied healthcare industry who position themselves in the right direction . 

FDI IN TOURISM 100 % in tourism  investment of $8-10 billion in the next 5 years.  660.87 million US $ which is 1.46 percent of the total FDI inflow into our country from April 2001 to December 2008. 

It has the potential of addressing issues such as rural poverty, strengthening the economic status of the rural artisans, earning forex etc. India has the potential to become a “global health destination” It is necessary to create the right environment to attract FDI by establishing progressive legalinstitutional framework and facilitating organizations
