 Reasons for poor viewership of hockey matches (both on TV

as well as on ground)  Reasons for not taking up Hockey as professional Player.  Contribution of various factors associated with game to above problems.  To find out ways to improve the major problems mentioned above.

 Secondary Data – we gathered some data and findings from previous efforts made by others on similar issues and tried to collect points on issues mentioned in previous slide.  Depth Interviews – we conducted one to one interviews with few persons and

tried to gather their viewpoints on issues mentioned previously.  We concentrated on(while collecting above two data) concerned with hockey:

* Past information and forecasts * Resources and constraints * Viewer behaviour * Legal environment * Economic environment * Marketing and technological skills

…  SECONDARY DATA FINDINGS: It helped us in gathering information regarding topics mentioned below which again helped us in forming survey in a better manner and in a structured way with deeper understanding of Indian Hockey Information obtained on: –

Study what the history of hockey has been in India.

– Study the current state of the game of hockey in India. – Study the effect of factors such as change of laws and regulations on the

quality of hockey. – Study the role of administration in Indian hockey

…  DEPTH INTERVIEWS FINDINGS: It helped us in seeking answers to three categories of questions the respective answers of which helped us in setting up the options for questionnaire to take the survey forward. Given below are category and respective responce that we collected…. Part 1: What deters you from watching hockey?      

Level of broadcast and commentary Lack of awareness. Lack of glamour associated with the game. Absence of identifiable role models. Level of performance acting as a deterrent. Lack of competitive tournaments.

… Part 2: How to improve viewing experience? • Make celebrities endorse hockey and hence enhance glamour associated • Improve the on-field infrastructure to attract crowds during matches. • „Buy‟ interests of the crowds to get them coming into stadiums; if not ,empty

stadiums de motivates people from watching the sport even on television. • Conduct pre-match „chat-patah‟ sessions to attract hockey non-enthusiasts. Part 3: What deters him/her to take up hockey as a sport ?  Lack of awareness.  Lack of „bread-winning‟ potential in the game.  Absence of role-models

Snapshots below will tell you how our National Game “Hockey” is being neglected by one and all……

By taking up survey in full form we want to prove below mentioned assumption of us, quantifying it through data survey and analysis . The assumptions have been arrived from the finding mentioned previously…. We want to prove…..  Poor infrastructure impacts the performance of the players.  Performance of the Indian National Hockey team impacts the viewership  Lack of administrative effort to popularize the game amongst youngsters

(schools/colleges) is decreasing the popularity of the sport.

 Absence of glamour contributes to the declining visibility of the

game vis-à-vis other sports such as cricket.  Revival of hockey needs strong media (both print as well as visual) backing.  Concentration of efforts directed towards infrastructure and towards

building media relations is required to pull non-hockey enthusiasts towards the game.

TARGET:  Consists of the aggregate of all people who have watched or

played hockey during the course of their lifetime, but has gradually shed interest with regards to the game (due to various reasons: our job being to search the reasons out) ------40 respondents

 Consists of aggregate of all people who played hockey during

course of their lifetime and still have active interest in game or still are part of it(include players and former players) ----------35 respondents

In next series of slides we will present all the questions of questionnaire that was filled up and the corresponding responses to it in number and graphical form

… Well after the completion of the survey we came to the following conclusions: •

Improvement in the interest level of hockey requires inclination, focus and effort from the administration to promote the game amongst the younger people ( try and start promoting the game in majority of schools and colleges which are backed by proper facilities).

Improvements can also be sought in areas such as the infrastructure of hockey grounds in India ( Astroturf pitches being of utmost importance).

Finally, improvements aimed at the state of Indian Hockey cannot be attained without active participation from the print and visual media and media can also play a huge role in the penetration of the game into the minds of hockey non-enthusiasts.
