Main factors effecting water quality of upper and lower lakes

Idol Immersion

Sewage inflow

In India religious practices have deep relationship with water Idols are usually bodies

made up of wood, bamboo, straw, jute ropes, clay, and plaster of Paris and are painted with bright synthetic colors, which often contain heavy metals

These are the studies carried out by some scientists at the time of immersion, these are the effects in the period of the ten days

What’s our plan for future

The heavy metals are known to be persistent in the aquatic environment , and gradually accumulate and magnify through the process known as bioaccumulation and bio-magnification, while they move up in the food chain. Thus, heavy metals may magnify in their concentrations at different trophic levels, including in fishes and birds inhabiting the lake, which finally reach the humans through food and drinking water.

Actions which have been and which have to be to be taken for overcoming the effects of immersion

Some of the areas have been prohibited for idol immersion The Bhoj Wetland Project was implemented with the aid of Japanese Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC) to take action for preserving the Upper Lake of Bhopal (called Bhoj Wetlands) Installation of aeration system have been done to various areas Awareness programs for general people to save the lakes.

Features of Fountain Floating fountain takes water from 15’-20’ depth and founted to a height of 80 – 90 feet. The height of water jets allows water to come in contact with air & fall back in the lake. The continuous recycling of water & mixing helps in increasing dissolve oxygen level in the lake water.

Ozonizers are also used

Conversion of atmospheric oxygen  Active part: Initially ozone kills bacteria & viruses & subsequently converted into oxygen The air mixed with ozone is diffused in the water to a depth of 10-15 feet

Conclusion :Therefore, it is suggested that the authorities looking into the environmental protection of the lake need to take necessary steps. Along with other measures, including strict implementation of central and state level legislation, they should conduct environmental awareness programs, may be through different media, particularly before the ‘Vinayakachauti’ day, to educate the public of the city and make them aware of the harmful environmental effects of immersion of Ganesh idols in the lake and persuade them not to use this lake for immersion of Ganesh idols. This may to some extent reduce the pollution of water of this languishing urban lake.
