Ms. Jones School Year: 2009 -2010

First Semester Syllabus The course materials will be presented in thematic units. Each thematic unit includes methods of assessment that will be employed. Junior Year: First Semester (Marking Periods 1 & 2) “School’s Free Choice” (Part 4) The Search for Identity The following essential questions will be used to direct students learning during this unit: 1. What is identity? 2. How does encountering obstacles affect your identity? 3. What role does culture play in shaping a person’s identity? 4. How can reading about the lives of others change our own identity? 5. How does self-perception and how others perceive you define your identity? 6. How does one’s appearance influence their identity? 7. How and why is the search for self an essential pattern in literature? 8. What elements of society act against an individual’s search for and understanding of self?

The following texts will be studied: Their Eyes Were Watching God– Zora Neale Hurston (A1 Text) Pedro Paramo– Juan Rulfo (World Literature Selection) Hamlet– William Shakespeare The Woman Warrior– Maxine Hong Kingston (A1 Text) Supplementary material will include poetry and essays on the theme of the search for identity.

Assessments •





Students develop a portfolio of representative work, including samples of essays, journal entries, creative materials and creative assignments, as well as rubrics and study materials including text-related vocabulary. Portfolio assessment will be part of the quarterly grade. Students will keep an Electronic Journal in which they focus on the essential questions and how the pieces of literature in this unit serve to address these questions. Electronic Journal entries will be graded at the end of each novel. Students will write and respond to Electronic Journal entries accompanying the reading assignments throughout the school year. These Electronic Journal entries will be graded at the end of each novel.

Students will deliver individual or group oral presentations in which they examine specific aspects of each novel.



Students will produce a 1000 – 1500 word critical essay on theme, symbolism, character development or the author’s style for each novel read.



At the end of each marking period, students will write an evaluation of their progress during the quarter. They formulate goals and strategies for improving their performance and their ability to reflect on their personal academic/social achievement.
