Green Roof Project – Instituto Dois Irmãos_ Rocinha_ Rio de Janeiro_ Brazil

1) Preliminary Construction:

Duration: 25 hours, one week of 5 hours of work per day Objectives: a) Install and join the plumbing for the drain that is already on the roof for an outdoor shower. b) Build a sloped base. c) Create water drainage. d) Build plant boxes with bricks. e) Waterproofing. f) Install a support with a nylon wire for plants and vines. Materials:

280 bricks 2 bags of cement, at 50 kg (110 lbs.) per bag 4 wheelbarrows of sand 4 40-gauge PVC pipes

PVC adhesive 7 40-gauge PVC elbows. 1 10-gauge PVC pipe 5 10-gauge PC elbows 1 shower with faucet 1 8-meter mat, black Waterproof seal Nylon wire 300 eye hooks Tools needed - 2 shovels Spatula Whelbarrow Ladder Measuring Tape Pen Labor needed: 2 volunteers to buy and transport materials 4 volunteers for the construction Stage I Cost:

2) Extrerior Scaffolding and Seed Beds:

Duration: 10 hours, 2 days of 5 hours of work per day Objectives: a) Install metallic squares on the wall b) Attach wooden planks to the squares with metallic screws and wire c) Install plastic boxes to the structure with screws Materials: -

5 wooden planks, 3” x 1.5'5 10 metallic squares 24 screws 3 bags of 20 nails - 10 seed boxes 50 nutds and bolts 24 rings 30 meters of wire 2 7/16 drill bits Tools needed: 2 drills Ladder Mano de obra necesaria: 3 volunteers to buy and transport materials 4 volunteers for the construction Stage 2 Cost:

3) Planting and irrigating the plants:

Duration: 10 hours, 2 days of 5 hours of work per day Objectives: a) planting and fertilizing b) install a simple irrigation system. Materials:

25 bags of organic soil 5 bags of stones for drainage Organic fertilizer 25 plants called “lantanas” 30 vines 25 cardinal plants 25 meters of hose with faucet connection

Tools needed: 2 shovels 3 pairs of gloves Labor needed:

3 volunteers to buy and transport the materials. 2-3 volunteers for the construction.
