Planning Physical to Virtual Server Migrations with Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit
Map Tool
Assment tools, used to be Vista readiness tool (free). Agentless tool for servers and desktops. Take inventory – perfmon captures for CPU, RAM, storage and network. 50 Meg download, .Net 3.5 SP1 and SQL express needed. Collecting inventory takes time and uses a setup dialogue.
Running Assesments
Need an inventory, eg. How many servers can run Windows 2008? How to capture, credentials required using wizard. Network impact should be low, using WMI calls. Various assesment senarios including saving power and security assesments!. assesments! Reports by server roles and consolidation options.
Sample Inventory Completed
Creates excel and word files. Word documents gives you some considerations. Would now capture perfromance metrics.
Demo
Many wizards for recommendations. Select R2 or Hyper-V target, including processor types (Intel/AMD). How many sockets and cores for target machines.
99% of the resource requirements is RAM.
8-12 ratio for typical 2U server.
Define disk subsystem of target host.
Selecting Candidates
Import computer names (netBIOS server names).
Creates proposal word document.
And excel reports to validate.
One VM per LUN, many small LUNs used.
