A STRUCTURE THAT WILL NOT FALL IN A MILLION YEARS

Did you know that there are more than 127 pyramids at Giza? And that more than 75% are still standing today? The Great Pyramid at Giza is probably the most beautiful wonder from the ancient world and it is the only one that it is still standing today, but why? The Egyptians were the first civilization to create monuments for their leaders. The Great Pyramid at Giza was constructed in the year 2587 B.C. and it was built as a tomb for their Pharaoh Khufu. In order to know why the Great Pyramid at Giza is still standing today, it is necessary to understand three important aspects related to its construction like the time of construction, the way and the shape used for its construction and probably the most important one, the materials and technology used by the Egyptians for this wonderful construction.

The Great Pyramid was constructed more than 4000 years ago by the followers of Khufu, probably the first Pharaoh that had a personal tomb in the plateau of Giza, Egypt. The time of construction is one of the aspects to take in consideration due to it was constructed more than 40 centuries ago. Even though, it is an old construction, it is known that the majority of the Egyptian creations are still standing today. Another important aspect to take into account is the way it was constructed. Six of the seven wonders are destroyed due to the shape used for their construction. Big constructions are vulnerable when they are constructed using columns that have to support a lot a weight. The balance can be lost at the top of a structure when the area at the top is larger than the columns the sustain it. The Great Pyramid at Giza was constructed as that, a pyramid. This means that the base is larger than the weight it has to support and the stone blocks used at the top of the pyramid are

smaller and lighter than the ones used on its base. But the most important reason is the materials and technology used. The Great Pyramid at Giza was built using a type a stone known as LIMESTONE. This type of stone is very resistant and it does not deteriorate with time. This type of mineral is not found near Giza, so it was probably brought by workers from miles away and transported, as some archeologists believe, by enormous boats through the Nile River. Once on land, the big blocks, as heavy as 5 tons, were carried by slaves from the Nile to the plateau of Giza. The technology used to place the blocks by floors is still unknown today, but it is believed that the Egyptians used ramps to take the huge blocks up the pyramid. The blocks were shaped into gigantic cubes that fit perfectly one next to the other. The tools used were made of ________ for this purpose. The blocks become smaller as they go up the pyramid.

The Great Pyramid at Giza is still standing today because it was constructed thinking it was going to last for a long time, the shape used and the dedication they gave for this pyramid and mainly because of the materials found and employed for its construction, materials that have given this structure the strength and power recognized throughout the years. For these and many other reasons, The Great Pyramid will be with humankind for many years more as a witness of a great civilization and the dedication and respect the Egyptians had towards their leaders. If people would learn a little from them, people would worry more about creating a legacy and forget about creating destruction. C.T. Rusell once wrote on his notebook “God placed the Great Pyramid in Gizeh as a symbol of power and respect for all humankind”.
