How does a ballpoint pen work The tip of the pen, a cone with the tip cut off, holds a steel ball which has been shoved into the end of the cone and held in place by a ring. Due to contact with paper, the ink sticks to the ball and is deposited on the paper since the paper is quite a bit stickier than the steel ball. This mechanism explains why ball point pens don’t work well on slick surfaces like packing tape or metal. These surfaces don’t provide enough friction to make the ball roll, nor are they any more sticky than the steel ball itself.
