Hope Resource Center STD Inf

Overview • Started in 1997 • Nonprofit ministry • Around 100 volunteers • Serves Knox County and 11 surrounding counties • 4 departments – Prevention, Intervention, Post-Abortion, & Rape Recovery • All services are free of charge as long as they are willing to receive

HRC – Main Office • Majority of patients are female • More associated with pregnancy scares • Offer STD testing • Free pregnancy tests

HRC – UT Campus • Majority of clients are male • More associated with STD testing • For teens they offer free treatment at both locations • AIDS – mouth swab test • Do not offer pap smears

HRC Staff • 5 Doctors • Nurse Practioners • Currently HRC’s main office is staffed with women, but in January 3 males will start at the main office • Entire staff is composed of volunteers

Funding • Very blessed with donations • Monthly donors – churches, people, companies • 3 yearly fundraising events – Spring – Banquet – Fall – Golf Tournament, volunteer Walk/Run

Just Wait • HRC’s Pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Disease prevention program • Program sanctioned by the Knox County School Board • “in your face” upbeat education • Educate children at 6th, 8th, and 10th grade • Emphasize abstinence

Just Wait • Discuss the 3 options of pregnancy – Parenting – Adoption

– Abortion • Kids are given cards informing them of location and phone number • Offer free HRC services

Pregnancy Programs • Goal: To provide a support system and provide for her needs • Testing • Counseling – Options – Carry, Abort, or Adopt • Classes – Parenting – Breastfeeding – Life Skills – Bible Study – New Beginnings Class – Dad You Class

Pregnancy Intervention

• Do not provide prenatal care • Positive Pregnancy – receive a free ultrasound – Creates a bond between the girl and the baby – Shows that the baby is real and it’s a life

Dad You Class • Object: Keep boyfriends involved in the prenatal experience, prepare them to be good dads, and good role models • Eligible to earn baby bucks • Meet with Tony Bacillo – sportscaster on the radio

Pregnancy Classes • “Baby Bucks” – Earned by attending classes – Can be used to purchase items in the “stork shop” – -can be earned up to 6 months after birth

• Baby Shower

Adoption • Recommends 2 adoption agencies – Bethany – Christian – Harmony – non religious • They are still welcome to attend classes, but usually adoption agencies prefer that they be under their care by 7 months

Post Abortion Ministry • Restoring Hearts • Goal: To reach women post abortion so that they can receive counseling to reduce emotional burden • Help them to feel that their life is not defined by abortion • Many women have emotional problems after the birth of their first child • 18-25 y.o. have most abortions • 1 out of 5 Christian women have had an abortion

Rape Crisis • Deal a lot with date rape • Send victims to Safe Haven • Offer counseling

Changes & Recommendations

• More open-minded program • Provide information on contraceptives • Possibly combine with Planned Parenthood
