One innovative method adopted to teach Social Studies in primary classes Every teacher wants her students to be effective in learning new concepts introduced in the class. My students too will be introduced to some new topics for the first time. For effective absorption of these topics, I will try to make them as interesting as possible. For example, when introducing the topic on Northern Mountains of India (Class IV), I will show them interesting picture slides. The slides will not only show the physical beauty of the lofty Himalayas, but will also tell something about the lifestyle of the people there, their dress, culture, etc. In classes III and V, the topics on the earth’s physical features will be taught with the help of picture encyclopedias and other teaching aids.
Stress-buster used by me to reduce the stress in the classroom In today’s hectic world, every individual is stressed out. This includes schoolteachers like us as well. This is particularly so, because we have to balance our responsibilities at home with those at school. Sometimes in this mad race, we may fail in coping with the stress, and pass it on to our children or students by failing to act as the role model. The students’ case is no different. In order to please every teacher, their parents, and deal with the ever increasing syllabi, students too sometimes feel immensely stressed out. As a teacher, I have noticed that by the last two periods, children are visibly tired and the strain of the day starts showing on their faces. A very effective stress-buster used by me is to give a timeout of 5-7 minutes, just before the class ends. We need to ensure that discipline is maintained, so I engage the students’ attention by asking them to come up one by one and tell a story, riddles, jokes, poems, or even sing a song. I have noticed that this refreshes the students a great deal and it is an effective stress-buster at all times. Barnali Chakravarty P.R.T. (S.St.)
