Dr. Mantaring’s guide to identifying cells: (Taught to most MDL 9 people) PCT cell: in cortex, with brush border DCT cell: in cortex without brush border, without clearly defined lateral borders Collecting tubule: usually in medulla, with cuboidal cells, without brush border, with clearly defined lateral borders of cells (meaning you can tell cells that are adjacent to each other apart– they don’t look like 2 nuclei in one mushy cell) Collecting duct: like collecting tubule but with columnar cells Thin limb of the loop of Henle: in medulla with endothelial squamous lining WITHOUT RBC in lumen Thick descending limb of LOH: like PCT cell Thick ascending limb of LOH: like DCT cell
