Hiking Report Fifth Peak Trail

4.7 miles 1,578 feet 3-24-2019 Bolton Landing, New York

Fifth Pear Trail was a moderate hike. Located about fifty minutes north of Saratoga Springs at the north end of Lake George. The drive was pleasant through the winding roads overlooking the lake. I began the hike around 12:00pm. The trail head was located on the road not far from the only parking area that only had enough spots for around 8 cars. Five minutes into the hike I came across a 40-50-foot bridge that was run down. From this bridge you could see the crystal-clear water in spots wear the ice had melted (Figure 1). I couple strides later I began to hear a waterfall. I went on a search for the waterfall and ended up finding it. The only problem was that the way to the falls was covered in ice so I couldn’t get the full visual effect of the waterfall. The rest of the way up was an easy hike with huge cliffs, streams, and massive trees blocking the trail. Close to the top I as greeted with a very steep climb but, it was covered in ice. This made the climb very difficult. After, I got passed this terrifying section it was about 1.3 miles to the top. At the top a moderate sized lean-to sat with a fireplace, and spectacular views of the north end of Lake George. You could also see Gore mountain in the distance (figure 2). While at the top I ate my lunch that consisted of 2 granola bars, a peanut butter and jelly, and a banana. I should have packed more. I started a small fire to warm up my hands and gloves (figure 3). I was proud of myself. When I was about to leave, I found a can of bear mace. Being a sixteen-year-old boy, of course I played with it. I sprayed it a couple times and didn’t think anything of, until I had to scratch my nose… that is when all hell broke loose. My nose was burning for close to two hours. I made my way down the mountain to the car and then headed home around 5:00.
