Chief Judge Hiatt retiring from 8th Judicial District bench Commission sets date to select nominees

The Eighth Judicial District Nominating Commission will meet Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at the Larimer County Justice Center to interview and select nominees for appointment by the governor to the office of district judge for the Eighth Judicial District (Jackson and Larimer counties). The vacancy will be created by the retirement of the Honorable James H. Hiatt, chief judge of the district. The vacancy will occur on July 31, 2009. To be eligible for appointment to fill the vacancy, the applicant must be a qualified elector of the Eighth Judicial District and must have been admitted to the practice of law in Colorado for five years. The current annual salary for this position is $128,598. The initial term of office of a district judge is a provisional term of two years; thereafter, the incumbent district judge, if approved by the voters, has a term of six years. The original and seven copies of the application must be filed with the ex officio chair no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009. Late applications will not be considered. Any person wishing to suggest a candidate to fill the vacancy may do so by letter to be submitted to any member of the nominating commission, with a copy to the ex officio chair, no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Applications will be kept confidential, except that the nominating commission shall disclose the names, work addresses, and work telephone numbers of those nominees submitted to the governor. The members of the nominating commission for the Eighth Judicial District are: Celeste Holder Kling, Tammie Niemann, Walta Ruff, Robert W. Schaffer and Bryan S. VanMeveren, all of Fort Collins; Keith H. Holsinger of Walden; and Esther Girard of Cowdrey.
