Ofsted (2009) says : A good school „integrates issues about safety and safeguarding into the curriculum so that pupils have a strong understanding of how to keep themselves safe. The school is pro-active in building on collaborative working with other key agencies to reduce the risk of harm to pupils.‟ A school is inadequate if: „Safeguarding regulations and duties are not met. or Arrangements for safeguarding are not robust and there is no system to maintain and update them, or the systems that are in place are ineffective. or Pupils do not receive sufficient information, or support, to enable them to keep themselves safe. or There is little or unproductive involvement of key agencies. If the school is judged to be inadequate in this strand of the evaluation schedule, its overall effectiveness is likely to be judged to be inadequate’ Ofsted’s evaluation schedule of judgements for schools inspected under section five of the Education Act 2005, from September 2009 P age 51
A strategy to address this 1 • Check that you have signed internet consent forms for all staff, pupils and governors • Include e-safety sessions are included as part of your ICT/PSHE lessons • Ensure that there is an up-to-date eSafety policy in place and includes an eSafety incident procedure (reviewed annually) and is understood/shared with all staff • Appoint an eSafety Co-ordinator • Provide annual eSafety sessions for staff/governors, pupils and parents/carers • Introduce encryption on memory pens / staff laptops – see Atomwide solution • Share LGfL “Using New Technology - Hints and Tips for adults working with children and young people” with all staff
A strategy to address this 2 • Use the Becta Self-review Framework to evaluate eSafety practices – Element 1 – Leadership and Management and Element 3 – Learning and Teaching • Collect evidence of eSafety activities – record in the SEF under section A4.7 The effectiveness of safeguarding procedures • Share the Becta guidance on Safeguarding children online: How e-safe are your school and your learners?http://publications.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=39409 • Include eSafety in the ICT Action Plan – indicating actions to be undertaken • Put up e-safety posters around the school • Add an e-safety area to your school website
