Hemophilia - Joe Stegeman Gene - X-linked recessive. F8 and F9 genes. Code for clotting factors VIII and IX, proteins that build fibers to stop bleeding. Symptoms – excessive bleeding from minor cuts, easy bruising, spontaneous bleeding around joints, internal bleeding, arthritis Diagnosis – blood tests determine clotting factor levels. <5% of normal is mild hemophilia Treatment – blood transfusions with concentrated clotting factors, synthetic clotting factors, gene therapy
Extra info – occurs almost exclusively in males, only females can be carriers, ran in the bloodlines of nearly all the ruling families of Europe in the early 1900’s
