HELIO POWER SYSTEMS

SOLAR ELECTRIC Every month the average US home burns a halfton of coal to generate electricity. Over the course of the year a single home consumes six 40-yard dumpsters worth of coal to power their home. Coal is the leading source of climate-changing emissions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS? This type of Solar System requires at least a few hundred square feet of roof space with absolutely no shading from buildings, trees, chimneys or other objects. The panels must be oriented to the south. HOW DOES SOLAR PV WORK? The energy you produce is converted into electricity for your home. Any excess is automatically sent into the grid where PECO is required to buy it. This is what causes the ‘meter to spin backwards.’ Each solar PV system comes with an free online application that allows the owner to monitor energy production.

WHAT IS SOLAR ELECTRIC? Solar Electric is also known as “Solar Photo Voltaic” or “Solar PV.” These systems convert energy from the sun into electrcity that your house can use.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The cost depends on the size of the system. The Federal Tax Credit and the State Rebate together reduce the cost of the system by more than 50%. In many cases the monthly loan payment for the solar system is the same as what you would have paid in Ultilities. Most systems pay for themselves in 5-10 years, far less than the panel’s 25-year warranty. This system also earns alternative energy credits which can then be sold back to the utility company . These credits currently trade for $275 each. You systems energy production is monitored through an easy to use online application.

SOLAR HOT WATER Hot water is the second-largest energy expense in a home and accounts for about one-quarter of the average utility bill. If every American were to install a solar hot water system in their home it would be the same as doubling the fuel efficiency of every car on the road today.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS? A Solar Thermal System has less rigid physical requirements than PV systems. Less roofspace is required and the systems function in locations with partial shading. In many cases a roof that may be inadequate for Solar PV is suitable for Solar Thermal. HOW DOES IT WORK? A special fluid (glycol) circulates between the panel and the hot water heater and transfers the heat from the sun to the water in your tank.

WHAT IS SOLAR HOT WATER? Solar Hot Water is also known as “Solar Thermal.” This system uses the energy of the sun to heat hot water and it is one of the simpliest and most efficient solar technologies.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Solar Thermal is less expensive than Solar PV but can only offset the hot water portion of your energy bill which is usually 25% or less. The Federal Tax Credit and State Rebate program reduce the cost of a Solar Thermal System by nearly 50%. This system also earns alternative energy credits which can then be sold back to the utility company . These credits currently trade for $275 each.

HELIO POWER SYSTEMS

Thanks to a federal tax credit and a new state rebate program you pay for less than half the cost of a solar system. This means you can generally finance the installation of a solar system with the money you would have paid to the utility company.

FINANCIAL INFO FEDERAL TAX CREDIT 30% uncapped tax credit (not a deduction) for the installation of a solar electric (Photo Voltaic) or solar thermal (hot water) system. A tax credit is different from a deduction. A deduction reduces the amount of earned income you are taxed on. A tax credit is subtracted from the amount of taxes you owe and can be carried over from year to year until it is used up. Think of a tax credit like pre-paying your taxes. REQUIREMENTS At tax time your accountant fills out Form 5695 with the appropriate information and you receive a tax credit from the IRS for 30% of the cost of the system. It’s really that simple!

IMPENDING RATE HIKES Another incentive for installing solar is the impending electricity hikes in January of 2011 when the Philadelphia market is deregulated. Although PECO anticipates a 25-45% increase in Philadelphia, rates in western Pennsylvania jumped 72% when the region was deregulated last year. Here is what happened in the other states following after their markets were deregulated: Maryland: 72% increase Delaware: 59% increase Connecticut: 79% increase Massachusetts: 56% increase Rhode Island: 48% increase Illinois: 55% increase Texas: 82% increase

PA STATE SOLAR REBATE Since May the state of pennsylvania provides a rebate for Solar PV and Solar Thermal. For Solar PV the state provide a rebate of $2.25 per watt installed. This approximately covers 30-35% of the cost of the system and is capped at $22,500 for residential. The caps for commercial are much larger. For Solar Thermal the state provides a rebate of for 25% of the cost of the system up to $2,000. REQUIREMENTS Only solar systems installed by Pennsylvania Sunshine Certified Installers, such as Helio Power Systems, are eligible for the rebate. Helio handles the entire rebate process. An application for the rebate is submitted on your behalf once a deposit is received. Before installing your new solar system we provide confirmation that your rebate application was filed. Once installation is complete we submit the final paperwork to the state and you receive a check within 60 days.

ALTERNATIVE ENERGY CREDITS For each megawatt of solar energy you generate you earn an alternative energy credit known as an “AEC” which can be sold. The state of Pennsylvania requires utilities to purchase an increasing number of AECs to offset their carbon footprint. These credits currently trade in Pennsylvania for $275 dollars each.
