About the Heineken Roeivierkamp The Heineken Roeivierkamp, organised by the Amsterdam rowing club Nereus, is a multiple distance 2-day rowing regatta. It is the traditional opening of the Dutch rowing season and it is known for its unique format. Over the past 35 years this race has received a lot of international attention and it attracts more and more crews who want to benefit from the opportunity to compete against Dutch and international crews, from club level to international SA level. General Ranking The format of the race is copied from the speed skating all-round championships, though the distances are divided by two: 250m, 750m, 2500m and 5000m. The scores on the separate distances are converted to 250m times; the sum of these converted times provide the final score. This format makes the regatta more challenging than other races; crews need to have the stamina to perform at long-distance but also need the skills for a short sprint. Bow Order To make the races even more competitive, the bow order for the distances on Sunday (750m and 5000m) is determined by the crew’s place in the intermediate ranking; the highest ranked crews start last. This guarantees spectacular races and calls the need for skilful coxing. The Race On saturday the crews take of for the 2500m and 250m. The 2500 is rowed ‘Head’ style; crews start with 20 second intervals. Your cox will be able to practice his or her coxing skills for the first time when you pass the ‘Omval’ (see course map on next page). Directly after this warming-up your cox has to steer right in the explosive head-to-head 250m - remember one second loss on the 250 is 20 seconds to make up for on the 5000m ! On sunday morning the Masters and Club crews are allowed to sleep a bit longer, but the others get up for the killer 750, the most underestimated distance. It’s not a sprint, but neither a 2K.
Sunday afternoon the H4K is concluded with the 5000m. As said, the startingorder is the reversed classificition, so you are competing against your direct opponent. Coxing makes the difference here; you can easily win or loose 10 seconds in the ‘Grote Bocht’ (‘Big Bend’). Sunday evening, after the prize giving ceremony, a grand party with top-class DJ’s takes off at Nereus. FInd out how long those axhausted legs will hold out! Unique atmosphere The Heineken Roeivierkamp is known for its unique atmosphere. More than 2000 participants transform the river Amstel into a huge arena in which only the strongest survive. The audience of more than 10.000 people will not only be entertained by this visual spectacle but is also served by our ‘Racing Reporters’ who comment the Heineken regatta the whole weekend via FM radio, in “Dutch touch”. Some quotes from participants “The Heineken Regatta is a high point on our racing calendar. We thoroughly enjoy the colorful atmosphere, the friendly students of Nereus and the enthusisam and professionalism of the race organizers. We always have fun, rain or shine, win or lose. We love the warm hospitality and of course, we love the beer!”
“Three races in one weekend plus a fantastic party afterwards - it’s the reason we’ve come three times in six years, despite the distance” John Armitage , Cambridge Boat Club, USA, participant in several years
Frederick Schoch Cambridge Boat Club Master’s D Eights Executive Director, Head Of The Charles Regatta, Boston
“Don’t forget to bring an experienced cox as the bendy Amstel river, together with a lot of overtaking (because of the inverse starting order) often calls for nerve breaking steering actions & clashing.” Gerritjan Eggenkamp, Oxford Blue Boat 2002 participant in several years
“I always really enjoy the Heineken Regatta, held at the River Amstel in Amsterdam. It is a four-distance race (2500, 5000, 750 and 250 metres) and a fun race to compete in. Events like these should be held more often.” Ivo Snijders Worlcup medallist participant in several years
