Definition of HBHCT It is a new evidence-based approach that supports home delivery of counseling and testing for:• Households of PHAs already accessing care and treatment through an AIDS service organization. • The general population through door-todoor services.
MODELS OF HBHCT 1.Target population. 2. General population. Target population (main focus): Here the client is used as the entry point for the family members and close relatives for the services of HCT.
BENEFITS OF HBHCT Increases access to HIV testing. Promotes early knowledge of HIV sero-status. Fosters prevention counseling. Help in identification of discordant couples. Facilitates early care of HIV in infected individuals and couples. Supports change of risky behavior to prevent new infections. Supports family centered care and prevention. Lays a foundation for adherence.
COMMUNITY MOBILISATION IN HBHCT Mobilisation is through:2. Drama 3. Mass media 4. Established community structures like L.Cs, religious leaders & cultural leaders 5. Door to door 6. One on one 7. CASAs, ACWs 8. Social events, e.t.c.
WHY MOBILISE IN HBHCT? Programme acceptance. Good response. Assess need. Reduce stigma. Mobilise resources.
STEPS IN HBHCT 1. Household education 2. Voluntary HIV counseling for house hold members. 3. Conducting rapid HIV testing in the home. 4. Supporting client disclosure of HIV status to household members.
1. HOUSEHOLD EDUCATION This is intended to increase awareness about HBHCT programme among members and to encourage voluntary participation in counseling and testing and to identify all eligible household members. • Introduction & orientation Key steps: -Complete household the registration form. -Ensure confidentiality. -Explain the HIV and AIDS care program -Share benefits of knowing one’s HIV status.
HOUSEHOLD EDUCATION cnt’d b) Group pre-test counseling -Review test process. -Discuss the meaning of test results. -Clarify misconceptions about HIV,AIDS and HBHCT programme. -Review risk factors for HIV infection. -Review options for risk reduction. -Identify eligible adult household members for counseling and testing.
2.VOLUNTARY HIV COUNSELING AND TESTING (VCT). This is offered to adult household members who have consented to counseling and testing. For children (under 18 years of age), information is given to a consenting guardian of an infant or child being tested. b) Pre-test counseling -Discuss the meaning of test results. -Consent to test. -Explain HIV testing procedure.
