LAGERS
BEER ALE
Top fermented and made at warm temperatures. Many styles, colors and alcoholic strengths.
LAGER
Bottom fermented and matured at low temperatures. Can be any color or strength. *****
PILSNER
Strictly speaking, a golden, hoppy, aromatic lager from Plzen, Czech Republic. Loosely speaking, has come to mean a filtered, dry, hoppy, light, golden lager.
SCHWARZBIERS
Dark brown to inky black. Have a full, roasted flavor, sometimes with a bitter chocolate note.
STEAM BEER
A cross between a bottom fermented beer and an ale, brewed with lager yeast at warm temperatures in shallow vats. *****
FYI
Contrary to popular belief, darker beers are not necessarily fuller in body or stronger in alcohol. There is no connection between color, fullness, and potency. Color derives from the malt used. Dark malts do not always create body, and their color has nothing to do with alcohol. Hops do not contribute alcohol to beer, but they do make for powerful aromas and flavors.
